I visited Alabama for business. A lunch time, I spied a "Jack's". It's not Jack in the Box, but the color scheme is similar. I ordered a hamburger without the bun as I'm gluten intolerant. The cashier called the order back to the kitchen. One hamburger, no bray-uhd. Yup. The word bread has two distinct syllables in Alabama. An FR friend who lives in Alabama has a son named Trip...pronounced Tree-up.

I cringe sometimes listening to my fellow Kentuckians. But it’s not the accent, it’s the butchering of the grammar, e.g., “Let me tell you what I seen and what I done about it”.

Alabama, that would be the sexiest accent, according to the article.

( I married a Memphis belle, it worked for me).

Boston is annoying but a Baltimore Maryland accent will make your ears hurt.

“Might that depend on which “paht” of Boston one is from? The movie made a point of whether characters were from South Boston (”Southies”).”

No. I grew up in Dorchester, right next to Southie.

To be fair to the actors, the Boston accent can be difficult to mimic. But we just don’t say ah everywhere. We just don’t pronounce r’s. And there’s no r in Boston.

There was discussion years ago by some radio Host who frequently referred to a ‘Dorchester twang.’

I myself have at times been able to place people from their neighborhoods based on certain inflections and terms. Dorchester is definitely unique in numerous ways. Affleck and Damon were from Cambridge though I think that Affleck has it ‘the Boston thing’ down well, I am not sure about Matt Damon. Affleck was great at it in ‘The Town.’

Outside of Boston there is a North Shore accent that is really significant in ‘Meffa,’ (Medford) but other areas have their own as well.

Are we sure Buffalo/Rochester isn’t actually part of Canada?
Sometimes I wonder.

I traveled to Portland Maine back in 1995.

Purchased fresh catch lobsters from the local fisherman. To my ears, their English was nearly indecipherable. You would not believe they were Americans.

PS: the 2 pound lobsters cost $3 each.

I’m really getting tired of what is not an accent but the voice inflection that some women speak with that makes them sound as though they are experiencing weakness, pain and suffering at that very moment. It’s stupid and extremely annoying. STOP IT!

My father was from Lowell, and that was pretty easy enough, but I always had trouble figuring out how they pronounced Billerica.

The Boston accent comes across as liberal ‘elite’, phony and full of itself.

Are you speaking of the accent associated with most working-class Bostonians..."I pahked my cah in Havahd yahd"?

Or the Brahmin accent that is associated with the likes of John Kerry, William F. Buckley Jr. and George Plimpton?

Two different accents.

I'm from Massachusetts and can't stand either of them.

I don't like anything associated with John Kerry - that said had a nice laugh at your last comment...

Boston has several accents. South Boston has some Irish twang. Harvard Square has a John Kerry snob inflection. Roxbury is ebonics. Chelsea and Revere areas are kind of low class. As you go north past Lynn, it begins to sound more and more like New Hampshire or Maine.

Not an accent, but I really dislike what appears to be a modern trend of simply not finishing any sentence —

“We were going to the. And, he was all, like. Anyway, the whole day was ... whatever. And I kept the thinking, where is the, you know. Because, I have stuff to do, and.”

I know a lot of people who seem focused on speaking without ever using a real Noun or a real Verb.

The weird thing is the people they’re talking to seem to know exactly what they’re talking about and answer in kind.

I I realized a long time ago many people communicate with a type of mental telepathy rather than language alone.
