Interesting quote considering it was an article of faith among Southerners then and pro-Confeferates today that, they claim, "The South" somehow paid ALL the taxes and everybody else was getting a free ride at "The South's" expense.

This article reminds us that not everyone at the time shared such views.

I’m pretty sure the item in reply #11 from John Beauchamp Jones is misdated. Probably a month early. The battle of Yorktown takes place April 5 to May 4.
