It's a typical Friday at Orange Tree Imports, a gift shop on Madison's Monroe Street — employees work and customers browse donning masks in a reality they've grown accustomed to the past two years.
Madison and Dane County will let its months-long coronavirus mask mandate expire. But Orange Tree will keep a mask requirement for staff and shoppers, said co-owner Carol "Orange" Schroeder.
Other Madison businesses appear ready to embrace what local health experts say could be the pandemic's next chapter, even after a harsh winter caused by the highly transmissible omicron variant.
Huge COVID case spikes this past winter resulted in staffing shortages that compounded an already tight labor market. And while some businesses encouraged their employees to work from home if possible, others had to close altogether.
Schroeder said she is concerned Dane County's mandate expiration is "premature." The business owner, like others in the city, worries about customers with children under the age of 5 who can't get vaccinated yet, as well as the immunocompromised.
She's also concerned about "more of a confrontation opportunity" for customers coming into the shop without masks, though she's encouraged the majority of the county is fully immunized, and customers have appeared willing to comply with local health protocols thus far.

Can I have a No Jews or Blacks sign?
No fat chicks?
No faggots?
And these same liberals are the ones who have "HATE FREE ZONE" signs posted in their lawns and on their office doors.
There was a restaurant near me that, during the original lockdown (when they were carry-out only), became so hyper about masking that they required customers to wear a “serious” loops-around-the-ears mask, not a bandana or tie-on mask. When the mask mandate was relaxed the following summer, they were out of business within a couple of months.
No way to prove it for sure, but I’m willing to bet they lost a lot of their customer base with that rule.
Just so I’m clear: it’s ok to require a mask, ie refuse to conduct business with someone with out a mask BUT you will be drawn and quartered if you refuse to do business with someone because of your faith? Or values? Anyone who disagrees with psychos in power…..
Nothing says “I’m an idiot” more than people driving alone in their cars, and wearing a mask.
Should change the name to “House of Karen”.
Always good when idiots self-identify.
Personally, if I were at that store, I’d quickly load up a lot their products, bring them to the front cash. When they tell me to ‘mask up’, I’d leave all the stuff at the cash, and explain about ‘freedom’, and walk out. Rinse, Repeat, for each store that acted that way.

This mask warning takes up the whole homepage. Great marketing, Carole. Also you want to vaccinate children under 5, are you nuts?
“I have a simple rule when it comes to crap like this. I will refuse to patronize.”
I fired my veterinarian last week over mask requirements. I’m not letting an idiot take care of my dog. Took the dog to a new vet just for flea medicine prescription. No mask, and no charge. Old vet just lost at least $500 a year.
They are making it easier to spot the idiots in our midst. I can’t think of any reason to patronize that business.
Customers didn’t have to wear masks, however their employees even those working outside in a brisk breeze had to wear masks.
Don’t follow Carole’s science? Order your imported made in China craft crap on the phone. Pickup is required on the back alley porch next to the back alley abortion clinic.
I need a sign sticker to put below the masks-required sign...
It’s their totem that lets people know they aren’t a Trump supporter.
Let them revel in their mental illness.
You can’t fix stupid.

It will be one place I would not frequent.
It’s Madison home of the univ of wis, they see all bat shat crazy there
‘Nothing says “I’m an idiot” more than people driving alone in their cars, and wearing a mask.’
I think the old couple I saw, masked to the hilt, walking outside in the bright sunshine with a steady 20 mile and hour wind, with no one within 100 yards of them, gives the masked drivers a run for their money....
