Not interested in an investment. It's purely for the sake of just having some gold.
Now is not the time to buy it, but, I've heard of people buying gold from dealers, and later discover it's not real.
I understand the difference between spot price and market price, but a couple of stores have been recommended.
Tulsa Gold and Silver. For example.
My question is, can such a place be trusted?
I’m not a gold bug. But I’ve read that a good rule of thumb is to buy government-issued gold only. A US one ounce gold coin might be more expensive than a “Gold by Jimmy” one ounce gold coin. But it’s also less likely to be fake.
Copper, Brass and Lead.
.
Magic sounds.
I also recommend Apmex.com. Very reliable and competitive prices.
You've been here at Free Republic since 2004, but are only now beginning to give serious thought to this / do the work and research it?!
Don't want to offend you, but my impression is that you are too naive to even consider diving in.
Regards,
Me too for silver rounds. I like silver better then gold.
Yup,
Late to the party.
In difficult times, merely showing it to people (e.g., a border guard with whom you are negotiating for passage; a street urchin looking to hook you up with some needed supplies; etc.) can get you coshed and lying in the gutter.
Regards,
Agree completely on 1/10 oz. US Eagles.
While tungsten has similar density as gold and has been used in an attempt to forge gold bars, it’s almost impossible to forge a 1/10 oz. coin. Tungsten is very brittle, unlike gold.
If/when you want to sell, a dealer/buyer would buy them from you with a quick visual inspection, such as examining them with a loupe.
If shtf 1 ounce of gold might buy you 1 ounce of green beans,,,
Agreed. APMEX is the real deal: I have bought from them, and I have sold back to them.
That is how I know they are real.
That guy went to jail, but my "metals" were gone if they ever existed).
Don't ever let anyone store your metals. Always take delivery, even if, like me, you were just storing it until you accumulated enough to save on shipping price.
Gold is high right now. If you’re not in a hurry, you can get a bit more for your $$ if you wait for it to come down, which it always does. But if you’re not too worried about it as an investment, I’d guess it’s not likely to come down by more than 10% anytime soon, so that’s not really that big of a deal, IMO.
The major dealers are pretty safe. I know that JM Bullion is one reputable source. A well established local coin shop should be pretty safe too. Compare prices, but don’t expect too much difference. It’s a commodity.
If this inquiry is even legitimate...
It reminds me of the innocent-sounding inquiries one sometimes encounters elsewhere on public message boards, about, say, BitCoin.
A moment after the inquiry, someone else pops up and says, "I've had very good experiences buying BitCoin from xyz - here's the link!" Followed by ten or twelve other "entities" immediately popping up and chiming in, "Yes, I've heard they're very good!" and "I already doubled my money!" and "xyz is the best!"
Not saying that that is the case here, but...
Regards,
I don’t think it should be either or. It should be both.
Unfortunately, the guy with the ammo is going to rob the guy with the gold.
You can sell at close to retail prices on Ebay, but it’s additional work.
I use APMEX.
Top quality. Reliable.

True, but also one of the more expensive places.
Although, sometimes they do offer some good deals on Ebay.
JMBullion is just as trustworthy and reliable and they are cheaper.
If you plan to spend your gold and silver during shtf you are a fool.
Metals are for when shtf is over.
