A woman had her scalp torn off by a Brentwood police dog after she shoplifted thousands of dollars from a nearby mall, video obtained by KTVU shows, raising serious questions about when and why K-9 units are deployed.
Talmika Bates, then 24, is seen in the video provided by her lawyers screaming and wailing in pain. The skin on top of her head was ripped off exposing blood and bone.
"Help me! The dog is biting me," she screams. "My whole brain is bleeding!"
The police officer in the video responds: "We're going to help you…but you shouldn't run from the police."
Bates talked about her painful recovery in an interview with KTVU on Wednesday.
"I really thought I was going to die," she said. "I really didn’t think that I was going to be able to tell this story and really explain to noboody. It’s just traumatizing. It's just sad."
She said she was taken directly to jail after doctors sewed her scalp back on at John Muir hospital in Walnut Creek. She said her hair still doesn't grow around her wounds.
"I feel ugly," she said. "I get miserable I get depressed. I'm not happy with myself. I don’t even feel cute."

You state this as if it was a self-evident truth.
In actuality, it is a legal theory, deeply flawed.
Why should a perp get off scott-free because the police blundered (not that I agree with this unconvicted felon’s lawsuit)? The end result is the release of perps so that they may commit additional depredations on the rest of us. Or even againt you yourself.
Injustice is preferable to ruin.
In this case, alleged injustice to the perp doesn’t excuse her. The legal theory is not sustainable in the real world (despite what out legal system has been doing for generations).
You are correct that a strong police dog can maim a perp the dog is trying to retain.
I watched a lot of Live PD before “woke” A&E dropped it. Every K9 handler repeatedly warned suspects they would “send the dog”. I don’t mean 2 or three times. I mean dozens of times. The would just keep repeating “stop or I will send the dog”, “get down or I will send the dog”. Smart ones immediately complied. Stupid ones got badly bitten. This young lady got bitten. It is a shame.

Not really apples to oranges just ability to deductively reason. If they do it up there they will do it here. After all they were just following orders.

FWIW - I once had an encounter with an East German Military or Police dog that had been rescued after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Our group had a speaker and after the meeting I helped him load his car. In the back was a German Shepard. A BIG German Sheppard. He was quite relaxed, didn’t even bark or growl as I helped load. I asked if I could say hello.
The owner explained that, while the dog was trained to attack if a certain command was given in German, in everyday life he had no problem interacting with humans.
I proceeded to introduce myself to my new friend, who was an absolute tail-wagging wet-kissing sweetheart.
Moral of the story is if you don’t give a K-9 warrior a reason to attack you he’ll be your best buddy.

Love it! So I guess the protected that are stealing openly in the cities should not be stopped. Just let them go. BS.
When the police tell you to stop, YOU STOP, you don’t just blow it off and run. Every black that have been shot(that are being called murder) did not respond accordingly when told what to do. Fighting with a cop has only one outcome, you lose.
So I guess you will be starting the fund to erect the statue to this lowlife.
Of course they have to run this story in Atlanta, even though it took place in Los Angeles. Gotta keep the “cops are racist” narrative alive.
