Can potatoes help you lose weight? Here's what a nutritionist says

Potatoes are high in fibre as well as resistant starch and can keep one full for longer periods. They also prevent overeating.

===================================================================================

Think of potatoes and delicacies like aloo paratha, french fries, potato chips, aloo tikki and other deep-fried stuff instantly come to your mind. No wonder, we associate potatoes with all things unhealthy. It is probably because of this reason potatoes have gained reputation of being a fattening food over the years and those aiming to lose weight and with diabetes are asked to avoid it at all costs in order to keep health issues at bay. The high carbohydrate content and glycaemic index of potatoes often overshadow its benefits. The truth is potato is not all that bad if eaten in the right way.

How potatoes could turn unhealthy is because of the way we cook it, and not because the vegetable itself is laden with calories. We are so used to eating potatoes deep fried (read french fries, aloo tikkis) or by adding butter and cream to them that at times we do not explore the possibility of cooking it in a healthier way like baking, boiling, roasting or air frying.

How potatoes can prevent overeating

In fact, potato is actually packed with nutrients that make it an ideal weight loss food. Dietician Garima Goyal told HT Digital that potatoes are high in fibre as well as resistant starch and can keep one full for longer periods. She says that it could prevent overeating.

"When you stay satiated, you actually eat lesser calories which directly shows on the weight scale," says Goyal.

Potatoes boost your metabolism

The nutritionist says potatoes are also found rich in Potato Protease Inhibitors- 2, which give you a feeling of satiety by the release of hormone Cholecystokinin.

"In addition, potatoes also are rich in antioxidants called polyphenols, which boost your metabolism by breaking down sugars at a higher rate," says Goyal.

How potatoes aid in weight loss

The high potassium in potatoes helps prevent water retention and plays an important role in aiding weight loss, as per the dietician.

There have been studies that show that potatoes can even lead to your fat cell shrinking.

Goyal says no one food can help you lose or gain weight unless you are on an overall calorie restriction diet and how we consume them is the key.

Eating potatoes the right way

"Consuming deep-fried potato chips or fries obviously isn’t the ideal way, but you can always opt for techniques like air-frying, baking, boiling, and roasting for reaping maximum benefits," says Goyal.

It's always possible to replace your unhealthy potato snacks with healthier alternatives. You can have baked potato chips and pair them with olive oil instead of your regular processed fried or deep-fried chips.

In nutshell, you can make potato your best weight loss mate, only if you eat it the right way.

Resistant starch increases if potatoes are cooked ahead of time, cooled and reheated

There is a guy on youtube that tests different scenarios on himself to see what spikes blood sugar. He tested this theory and the difference between the spikes was not very much. Both spiked his blood sugar significantly.

"Beat Diabetes!" channel Resistant Starch - Does it Really Lower Blood Sugar?

There may be some long term benefits to resistant starches. And different people may have different results. If you're going to try to eat cooled potatoes, you should do the blood sugar check on yourself.

After my wife retired and her gourmet cooking 7 days a week put extra pounds on both of us.

Then, I ended up with cardiac issues and a stent. We refused to go on the diets pushed by the cardio docs and their statins.

The FP, my wife had worked for about 4 decades had the same issues. Both he and his wife were gourmet cooks if not chefs. They gained even more weight than my wife and I did.

Together, the 3 of them remembered their Italian patients who ate the non fad keto diet of no starches unless they were done in the oven with olive oil and never gained weight.

So, they/we/I got into the non fad Keto diets. Dinners were prepared on cookie sheet pans with parchment paper on the cooking side of the pans. Only olive oil, sea salt and freshly ground pepper was used to cook with. Butter, real butter was on the table if we wanted to use it.

We char grill meals when not done in the oven and again Olive oil is the only additive besides real salt and pepper. We sometimes eat one slice of french bread with real butter.

My wife put up a snack counter with fruit, veggies and a almond/pecan bottomless bowl for snacks. No high sugar nor products with multi syllable ingredients. Nothing that came in a box or bag was served. Whenever, we get the hungry’s, we snack.

The Covid pandemic has resulted in a lot of weight gain with the patients/prisoners of the pandemic. Many if not most people can’t fit into jeans/slacks and fitted tops, they wore before the pandemic. That is not a problem with my wife, the Dr and his wife noted above and me.

In a few months, the retired Doctor and his wife lost 40 and 25 pounds. My wife lost 35, and I lost 25/30 with our modified Keto diet.

In the spring/summer and early fall, I/we visit the local fruit and veggie stand 2-3 times per week, and the owner will call us when certain veggie/fruit products are being picked.

We eat Salmon, chicken thighs, pulled pork, ham slices, steak or hamburger once a week and a lamb rack about every 2 weeks. We cook enough or grill enough for lunch leftovers.

“I like to enjoy life as well”

Agreed, you can’t stop living.

All kidding aside in 2016 after several episodes of chest tightness I saw a cardiologist. The day after that lead to a heart cath, angioplasty and stent for a 90% blocked LAD artery (aka the widow maker).

For anyone who hasn’t experienced it, that will get your attention on several levels, two being diet and exercise.

It’s also an experience that I would certainly NOT want to repeat.

Red meat and pork are rare but a couple three times a year is acceptable.

Sugar and salt are minimal.

Because of that issue I will have a relationship with a cardiologist for the rest of my life.

I also get the privilege of doing treadmill stress test every 24 months.... that I hate like poison.

I just pay more attention to what food and drink I intake more than I used to and it seems to be working out.

I’ll probly get hit by a bus tomorrow. Lol!

What? Every nutritionist and body-builder have known for decades that high index carbohydrates like potatoes, pasta, breads, and rice are more quickly converted into fat than protein foods. It is the way the body metabolizes carbs. Of course there is the exception of low index carbs like fruits and veggies.

And yes, potatoes without all the cheese and sour cream are still converted into fat.

A new day...a new theory. All you need do is look at body-builder diets. There is also a reason the Atkins and Keto diets work so well. Nutri-System and Weight Watchers take much longer because they include high index carbs.

My Wife has tried them all. When she went with Atkins the pounds just melted away day by day. Now back on Jenny Craig for months and while losing some weight, she can't get to where she was on Atkins. Plus, she has to eat 5-6 meals a day which in theory does increase the metabolism. I keep telling her 20 minutes on our treadmill a day would do the same and save her lots of money.

Lastly, women seem to crave high index carbs more than men. And they wonder why they can't lose weight. It's not simply about calories in and calories expended. It's mostly about the type of calorie. This nutritionist is wrong.

LOL, avoid public transportation for numerous reasons...

I’ve played sports since 5 (soccer - The Wookies) and lifted since 14.
I still lift 3 times a week, play volleyball and train for masters track and field - sprints.
I’m blessed in that I love working out.
Taking time off is the hard part.
Last Summer I went George Costanza and “did the opposite” for a month. Ate whatever and did zero workouts.
Somehow I lost 12 pounds and was just as strong after a week or two.

I'd bet that didn't last much after the second week.

Yeah, also some of it is genetics I think.

My dad had heart issues but he was a 2 pack a day smoker for 35 or 40 years so it stands to reason.....me, never smoked in my whole life and still.

Genes are definitely a huge factor.

Everyone knows some healthy person that died young, and a smoking drinker that lived to 95...

The answer is an unequivocal yes, with a caveat:

You MUST have a healthy gut and no other conditions which may affect metabolism & digestion.

Can’t wait to try out my new air fryer/oven when it arrives (proved the concept on a countertop air fryer, which unfortunately turned out to be disposable, as most of them probably are as well).

If it works for you great, we are all different in metabolism

For me I was able to keep at 6-7% bodyfat, bench 2x my weight and do a mile under 6 minutes on strict keto in my early and mid 40’s

Almost zero joint pain or other inflammation issues and the best part is it didn’t phase me to go 24-36 hours without eating and taking 30 mile hikes with nothing more than water and a bag of cashews/almonds
