Associated Press All 3 defendants convicted of hate crimes in Arbery killing RUSS BYNUM Tue, February 22, 2022, 8:18 AM·5 min read BRUNSWICK, Ga. (AP) — The three men convicted of murder in Ahmaud Arbery’s fatal shooting were found guilty of federal hate crimes Tuesday for violating Arbery’s civil rights and targeting him because he was Black.
The jury reached its decision after several hours of deliberation on the charges against father and son Greg and Travis McMichael and neighbor William “Roddie” Bryan.
During the trial, prosecutors showed roughly two dozen text messages and social media posts in which Travis McMichael and Bryan used racist slurs and made derogatory comments about Black people. The FBI wasn’t able to access Greg McMichael’s phone because it was encrypted.
The McMichaels grabbed guns and jumped in a pickup truck to pursue Arbery after seeing him running in their neighborhood outside the Georgia port city of Brunswick in February 2020. Bryan joined the pursuit in his own pickup and recorded cellphone video of Travis McMichael fatally shooting Arbery. The killing became part of a larger national reckoning on racial injustice after the graphic video leaked online two months later.
Defense attorneys contended the three didn’t chase and kill Arbery because of his race but acted on the earnest, though erroneous, suspicion that Arbery had committed crimes in their neighborhood.

And I was laughing at YOU, not the death of Arbery.
You are a major-league shitposter, always have been. Say stupid crap then call anyone who disagrees names.
Why would there be testimony about it? The whole phone thing is a pathetic redherring from you. As I already pointed out.
Nope. I just don’t put up with crap from idiots. If you were laughing at me then you went to insults first. Either way. You have no point.
Disagree.
They had no legal authority to do what they did.
Disagree.
Had this guy been white, no charges would have been filed. This is a politically correct scape goat issue, not a real issue of justice.
I absolutely and fully believe that. This is a political football, and everyone was afraid they would have the media hate stream turned on them if they didn't convict these guys.
These are "witch trials" and the media is the accusers. There can be no justice under these circumstances.
The news media did not exploit this like Travyon Martin and other cases because it was open and shut case. The McMichaels violated every rule on lethal force, and it was obvious they were racially motivated.
The above is absolutely hilarious. You tell me to stop being gas lit, and then you proceed with a completely gas-lit narrative.
So tell me, what do the rules tell you to do when a strong and known violent criminal punches you in the mouth and then tries to wrest your gun away from you?
I want to know. What would *YOU* do if a violent criminal who is clearly much stronger than you physically, assaulted you and tried to take your gun away from you?
Absolutely gas-lit crap. None of those WHITE people were seen over and over again in that house in the MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.
The owner sent the McMichaels the videos of Arbery going around in that house at night, and he didn't do this once, he did it many times over several months.
They *KNEW* who the problem was because they had *VIDEO* of this piece of sh*t casing the place for months before it happened.
Did you know the McMichaels had the video? Hmm?
You are gas lit, and you are repeating the gas lighting to others. You need to stop and learn the facts before you try to tell other people what happened.
I am starting the story at the relevant point. Arbery chose to do the very dangerous thing. Had Arbery chose differently, nothing fatal would have happened to him.
When Arbery made the decision to attack a man with a shotgun, that was the decision that got him killed.
The jury in the criminal trial was privy to, and took into consideration the parts that you conveniently omit.
What I have observed about Juries is they are often idiots. Do you think Derick Chauvin "killed" George Floyd?
I do know the judge withheld information from the Jury, and I do know the judge gave completely incorrect instructions on the law, and so the jury had a pretty good reason for getting this verdict wrong.
I do know the entire national media *HATE* machine was after these guys, and I know many juries are intimidated by the hatred generated by this media lying system.
Right after Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted, people were threatening to burn neighborhoods. Do you think this results in a fair trial?
Bullsh*t. The Jury was terrified, and the news liars had polluted the jury pool anyway.
Now if you think there is some important part that I have "omitted", put it on the table and we will discuss it.
I think i've covered the only important and significant aspects of this case, but you may feel differently.
“The guy doing the engaging *WAS* the police. He had been doing that same job for 25 years.”
No, he wasn’t. He was retired.
You sir, have acquired a significantly higher level of respect from me. Many people cannot admit they were mistaken, and I respect those who can. I also respect the reasoning power of those who can realize they are mistaken.
It comes from not wanting all of us to be labeled, doxxed, hunted down, canceled and banned on social media. Those are the stakes of slander against us when we didn’t do anything.
I get this. I am sorry to admit it was my first thought as well upon hearing of these case. I said to myself:
"What the f*** do these stupid braindead rednecks think they are doing chasing after a black man with guns? Do they know how the national media is going to play this? Idiots."
That is exactly what I thought, and I still think they are idiots for not realizing the extreme political danger for doing what they did.
Anyone paying attention to modern politics would realize immediately that they were taking extreme risks in trying to navigate interracial crimes.
But once I got over that and started looking at the facts, it became clear to me these guys were being railroaded by an emotion driven populace which had been revved up to a fever pitch through deliberate antagonism by the media liars.
The populace became a mob outraged by the lies they had heard and it colored their view of events.
They call us “domestic terrorists” for Jan. 6th and AOC spreads the lie that even though she wasn’t actually in the Capitol at all on Jan.6th, that someone from us (the conservative right) was trying to murder her. If not try to date her.
And this is a point I want people to understand. The media LIES about us. Christine O'Donnell was a "witch." Chris McDaniel was a "racist." January 6 was an "insurrection." George Floyd was murdered. Judge Roy Moore was a "child molesting rapist." Rick Perry camped at "N***er Rock". Sarah Palin incited the shooting of Gabby Giffords. Todd Akin supports the rape of women. And on and on and on.
They point the mob at us and accuse us of horrible things, and they do this because that's how they hold on to power. We are Jews to the Media Nazis, and they will always treat us this way until their power is broken.
We should not go along with them. We should fight them every step.
Fiat justitia ruat caelum.
No, I believe you are the victim of media lies. The only mistake you made was this. "That was what I was told the case was, and I took it at face value."
You can't trust what the media liars tell you. They cover up information that doesn't support their narrative. They do it over and over again, and we simply have to find out the truth through other sources.
I’ll take your word for it that the videos don’t support the media narrative, and let it be at that. But I’m not watching any videos.
You don't have to watch any videos. I've posted images of stills taken from the videos, and I will tell you that the Prosecutor in the Trial has admitted that these are all videos of Ahmed Arbery going through that house at night. He can be recognized precisely because of his particular tattoo on his upper left arm (I think) that can be seen in the videos.
Those images by the way, are from the Daily Mail. It's gotten so you can't get the truth from domestic media, and have to resort to foreign media to find out what is actually happening in your own country.
Let their lawyer tell it to the appeals courts.
Might work but I very greatly doubt it. Depending on what judge they get, the judge will either be part of the mob or afraid of the mob.
The chances of them getting a brave Judge who will do the right thing are pretty slim in my estimation, but I could be surprised.
I apologize for saying you were repeating a lie. I did not realize you simply accepted what other people said without checking. I try not to do that, but I find myself occasionally doing it too. Again, I am sorry.
So? Back when they were lynching black people, these same groups of "authorities" and "juries" did exactly the same thing.
They are just doing it again, but the colors are reversed.
The facts speak for themselves to reasonable people, and the facts do not agree with what all the authorities are pretending happened.
The "authorities" are afraid of the mob, and simply gave the mob the verdict they thought the mob required.
Disagree.
Had they been black and the suspect white, you’d be howling for their blood.
Are you kidding? I am thrilled to death when a white piece of sh*t gets killed? Those guys Kyle Rittenhouse shot?
Hallelujah! He should have shot more of them!
I've known plenty of white criminals that I wish someone had shot. I would love to see every antifa piece of sh*t eat some lead.
So why do you feel the need to accuse me of racism? What have I said so far to give you the impression that I am only defending these guys because one of them shot a black guy?
Those aren’t stills of him attacking anyone and trying to take away their shotgun. Burgling a construction site is not grounds for deadly force. Assault might be, depending on the facts.
“Might work but I very greatly doubt it. Depending on what judge they get, the judge will either be part of the mob or afraid of the mob.
The chances of them getting a brave Judge who will do the right thing are pretty slim in my estimation, but I could be surprised.”
Appeals courts are usually panels of several judges. But, yeah. That’s life. They might spend the rest of their lives in jail, or get old sparky. These guys were not Rittenhouse, though. They should have just observed him and phoned it in. Story isn’t over.
Says who? Because they found a dent in the side of the guy's truck and claimed they found "fibers"?
Who hits someone with the side of their truck, and how do they even do that? Fishtailing? Doing burnout doughnuts?
Get serious. If Arbery put that dent in the truck, it's because *HE* ran into the truck, not because the truck ran into him.
You just repeat half-truths without even trying to understand the whole truth.
Wait! Aren't you one of the guys claiming they chased him around with guns and trucks and even "hit" him with the truck, and you are now saying he didn't have reason to call 911 even though he could have stopped running (in the video) and done that?
Could have gone to one of the houses and banged on the door screaming "Help! Three Rednecks with guns are chasing me and they mean to kill me! Call 911!
Naw, thug don't worry about punk@$$ white boys with guns. Thugs gonna whip their @$$ for getting up in his grill.
I know what i'm talking about. I used to have several friends like this.
Perhaps the law is different in Georgia, but I am told that here in my state, a police officer is regarded as legit law enforcement until he dies.
I've been told that many times by police officers whom I have happened to know over the years.
But what is this artificial barrier you have created before he retired and after he retired?
Why do you see a boundary there? It's the same man doing exactly the same job he has always done, yet there is something about retirement that suddenly makes him incompetent and/or illegitimate?
His actions would have probably been even more aggressive had he still been an active duty cop.
Once a peace officer, always a peace officer. That's what they tell me anyways.
“But what is this artificial barrier you have created before he retired and after he retired? Why do you see a boundary there? It’s the same man doing exactly the same job he has always done, yet there is something about retirement that suddenly makes him incompetent and/or illegitimate?”
Yeah, it’s called color of law. He is no longer a police officer; thus he cannot act under color of law anymore.
Did the police department provide for his defense? No, because he was not on the force, and he was not acting under color of law.
That was covered in the video that got everyone worked up.
Burgling a construction site is not grounds for deadly force.
Of course it isn't, and they weren't using deadly force until he attacked one of them. The grounds for using deadly force are a physical assault from a clearly stronger man while attempting to wrest away a gun.
They should have just observed him and phoned it in.
Everybody's a genius in hindsight. Officer McMichaels had previously dealt with hundreds of cases like this guy, and he did what he thought was reasonable at the time.
Can we agree that none of us would have expected a man to run up and punch someone holding a shotgun?
Anyone reading these messages, please tell me if you would have predicted that a man would run up, punch a man holding a shotgun and then try to wrestle the gun away.
I think 99% of the population would not see that coming. It was the behavior of an insane man, or someone out of his right mind, perhaps because of drugs. (Which we know Arbery was under the influence at the time.)
“Perhaps the law is different in Georgia, but I am told that here in my state, a police officer is regarded as legit law enforcement until he dies. I’ve been told that many times by police officers whom I have happened to know over the years.”
Before I retired, I was a litigation analyst in the insurance industry. During my long career, with one of my companies I handled law enforcement liability cases, which included 42 USC 1983 cases. Neither we — the insurer — nor the law enforcement agency (be it municipal or state) would defend a current or retired cop who was not acting within the course and scope of his or her position with that agency or department. And NO retired cops were ever covered unless they were deputized for a specific purpose.
To my FRiends who didn’t take Latin in junior high (or use an online translator):
Fiat justitia ruat caelum.
Let justice be done though the heavens fall.
Agree.
And as you said:
We should not go along with them. We should fight them every step.
