A photograph came across my screen today that perfectly encapsulates what's wrong with modern, traditional education. (I use the word "traditional" as a contrast to Montessori or Waldorf schools.) In it, we see that a child gave a correct answer to an ambiguous question, only to be told his answer was wrong because the teacher was unable to see beyond the confines of her answer book. Things like this turn students into the kind of mindless drones who think as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez does.
Here's the photograph:
If it doesn't come through clearly, what you see is that the child was given the following problem in a math class:
8. Reasonableness Marty ate 4/6 of his pizza and Luis ate 5/6 of his pizza. Marty ate more pizza than Luis. How is that possible?
As you can see, the child is presented with a statement of fact: Marty's 4/6 of pizza was less than Luis's 5/6 of pizza. The child is asked to describe a scenario in which this is, in fact, a possible outcome. Presumably, the word "reasonableness" was a tip-off that the answer should be "that is unreasonable," even though the question isn't framed to elicit such an answer. "How is this possible" is framed to elicit an explanation, not a denial.
In the case of the photograph, the smart child noticed that Marty and Luis were not sharing a single pizza. Instead, each clearly had his own pizza. The child, obviously bright, immediately realized exactly how this could be possible:
Marty's pizza is bigger than Luis's pizza.
That is a correct answer. Not only is it correct, but it also shows a child with a flexible mind capable of thinking outside the box.

In 1968 in the 5th grade I said I didn’t think we had enough information to know for sure Pluto was a planet. I was called an idiot.
Ever heard of Sicilian?

That’s who you’re never supposed to go up against when death is on the line!
The child has a significantly higher IQ than his “instructor”.
I have them cut it into 4 slices cause I could not eat more than 4 slices.
School pizzas are often square.
Correct, I remember it.
I mentioned green because that color provided the evidence needed to confirm the political affiliation and acceptance of Woke Propaganda by the Racist, Leftist Tool that graded the child's correct answer of the question as "not possible".
And you are astute enough to notice and associate the color with the Woke Disinformation that caused the "teacher" to select it.
Kudos, you're on the ball.
In college I took a general biology course. On an exam I was asked the following question:
Q. What are the causes of old age ?
The answer I gave was
A. Being born early and not dying early.
The professor marked it wrong and I protested saying my answer was 100% correct. He finally said he meant the effects of old age and I should have known that.
I asked if I had to explain the difference between cause and effect for a science professor?
I got full credit

Because parents don’t tell their kids, “The Teachers aren’t responsible for your education, YOU ARE!” And then parents actually paying attention to what their kids are (or aren’t) learning in school.
LOL!
That’s funny. Sad, but funny.
A high school girl in our church was having trouble with math, so Hubby, PhD in Physics, tutored her a few times. The methods she was supposed to use made no sense at all (”new math”? - I don’t know), so DH showed her how “work the problems” and figure them out. She learned.
Only trouble was that she became a target for the teacher. The kid explained how she arrived at her answers, and the teacher had no clue. Teacher just followed the written text.
The girl was so harassed and tormented by Teacher that the parents had to move her to another class.
I believe that is a deliberate reason for “the new math” using intricit “set theory” and re-arrangements, instead of rigorous rules and processes that will work every time.
It is the “Educational Professionals” who do not have the discipline to work the real math problems, who “want the freedom” to think freely and to escape the “rigid boundaries of their racist bourgeoise past” ...
But, what DOES HAPPEN is that “parents” (and grandparents nor anybody outside of the Educational Community” can no longer help their kids. It demeans the parent, it forces the children to kowtow to their Teacher as the “The Only Adult Who Knows This”
... A real position of power and authority to the Teacher, The School Board, The Education Professor back in the home office of the school dristrict, isn’t it?
Back in the 90’s when my daughter was in elementary school and then Middle school, she was having a ‘problem’ with learning her math.
I took a look at her textbook and it was garbage. It was all about ‘groupings’ and getting ‘sets’ and ‘combining’ sets, etc.
The BASICS WERE NOT BEING TAUGHT even back then.......................
I do. After the invasion of the H1B's, I became a Science/Math teacher at the high school level.
You would not believe how many times I had to correct the ANSWER sheets of the teachers.
Some were not amused.
I don’t believe this is an H1B problem. It’s more likely to be a wokeness problem.
I’ve seen this kind of stupidity in my children’s public schools.
That is handwriting???
Well, print.. but you knew what I meant.
