Woman to sue LAPD after spending nearly two weeks in jail due to wrongful arrest

The Los Angeles Police Department is facing scrutiny after a woman claims she was arrested in a case of mistaken identity and jailed for almost two weeks.

Bethany Farber said she was arrested at LAX when police believed she was a different woman with the same name.

She was headed to Mexico to see her brother and goddaughter, but instead, Farber was taken into custody by the TSA due to an arrest warrant for Bethany Farber in Texas.

“Immediately, all I could think was I’ve never been to Texas,” she said.

The no-bail warrant kept her locked up for 13 days...

“All this is done because LAPD failed to check the driver’s license, the birth date, the social security [number], even the booking photo of the other Bethany Farber. You can see there’s no relation. They look nothing alike,”

The LAPD said they don’t comment on pending litigation.

Do they comment on their own stupidity and incompetence?

The big news here is that the LAPD actually arrested someone.

They aren’t afraid to arrest non-criminals.

It’s the criminals that scare them.

I wish people understood that police are the standing army our founders warned us about. Like the myth of teachers being the best and brightest (they think so anyway), cops are not drawn from the top layer of the gene pool. The founders did NOT envision any sort of a permanent standing armed force controlled and run by the government.

A close relative was in the police academy in SF in 2009. Some of the anecdotes she related about those in the academy was disturbing. And, believe it or not, SF - at that time - was hard to get into, had some of the highest standards in the country.

She is lucky that, unlike the poor guy in Hawaii, she did not end up in a mental ward given strong drugs for years.

The police are lazy.

They do not check their work and once you are in the system they consider it highly insulting to check the work of who ever processed you.

So you are in the system and will be chewed on until someone rescues you.

Guessing this woman was white, which led to the arrest.

I would be concerned about giving the police my SS number. I once stopped filing a theft report (from my car) because they wanted my SS number as I was a ‘victim.’ They even wanted my height and weight. I was not present during the theft. It happened in my driveway sometime in the night.

I don’t know just when it happened. But some time ago police ceased to be “peace officers” and instead became “law enforcement officers”.

The operative word went from “peace” to “enforcement”. That is no small change.

You were the victim of a crime. I’m struggling to understand why the police would want your social security number. Could it be that they wanted to check you for warrants while they were at it?

I’m hoping that there is another explanation. If so, I can’t think of it.

This was little more than a decade ago and over the phone so I don’t expect they assumed any warrants. I’m being benevolent in guessing that it was for ‘record keeping’ and having a unique key, but then I have to ask ‘what do they do for illegal aliens?’ Actually, I think I asked this, but got no meaningful answer.

Maybe it was that they got paid for statistics they sent elsewhere...???

That’s because “peace” does not generate enough revenue or funds to pay for bloated police budgets, premium healthcare, and golden parachute retirement plans. “Enforcement” on the other hand pays handsomely.

What most people don’t understand is that the mottos on LEO vehicles (i.e.: To Serve and Protect, A Tradition of Service, etc.) is not about serving and protecting the citizens or taxpayers. Rather it is about serving and protecting the government, their paychecks and retirement plans, and their fellow officers.

To wit, the Supreme Court made a ruling about 20 years ago that says the police have absolutely NO responsibility or duty to save or protect anybody. Feel free to look it up if you doubt me. It’s a fact.

They don’t comment on their own stupidity and incompetene because they are too stupid and incompetent to form complete sentences.

“LAPD failed to check the driver’s license.” ‘Nuff said. My patron saint does a better job of protecting me than the LAPD.

A thoroughly disgraceful performance by the LAPD. Hopefully Ms. Farber and her attorney can extract a few million from the city’s taxpayers.
