TikTok hair influencer Laura Ashley may be one of the no ’poo trend’s best successes — and all it took was going six years without using shampoo or conditioner.
Ashley, 27, claims her hair went from “pin straight” to curled and sweeping, thanks to ditching traditional cleansers and adopting a raw, vegan diet.
“My thing is, if I can’t pronounce it or I don’t know what it is, I’m going to try and stay away from it,” she told South West News Service of the chemical-laden fine print shown on most store-bought shampoos. The California thrift shop owner said she wasn’t convinced that humans actually need to wash their hair.

I agree, she’s the classic hippie chick. Janis Joplin with a cuter face.
Pine cone ginger, so named because it’s flowers resemble red pine cones, has a liquid in its flowers that makes a terrific shampoo. There is enough in one flower to last 3 or 4 washes.
Must be a slow news day.
I suppose if a man had been on the high seas for twenty straight years, she might do.
What exactly makes you think she even showers?
Do you know the difference between a hippie chick and a hockey player?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hockey players shower after three periods.
I’m a guy and never used antiperspirant. Never felt the need although I sweat a lot. Change shirts and clean up with a washcloth when I get inside.
But...my hair is no more than 2” long and shampoo DOES get it cleaner and softer than just bar soap. Bar soap will get the dirt out but leaves its own residue. And not washing? My hair STINKS before the second day is over.
Maybe it has to do with body type and variations in the percentage of eccrine vs apocrine glands found in various sections of the body.
“1. You have two different sweat glands.
They’re called the eccrine and apocrine glands. Eccrine glands are all over your body and produce watery sweat to keep your body cool. Apocrine glands are located where hair follicles are most concentrated (scalp, armpit, and groin), and the sweat is waxy and fatty from the lipids they secrete, says Whitney Bowe, M.D.
2. Your hair can enhance the odor.
It’s actually not the actual sweat from apocrine glands that creates that smell. Stench-causing bacteria happens to be attracted to that particular sweat, says Bowe. And once they break down the fats in apocrine sweat, the stay-away-from-me aroma appears. The more hair you have, the more surface area bacteria has to cling to, which keeps the smell so pungent, says Bowe.”
To get oil out of hair, it would take a LOT of water. Or soap.
I haven’t used shampoo for several years.
I started going bald over 20 years ago. Now I just shave off what little hair I have left.
“What does not eating meat/dairy/cheese got to do with her hair? It would still look the same regardless what she eats.”
That’s simply not true. What people eat comes out their pores and makes up their body. People can be healthy and eat meat and cheese, but daily consumption of both is a relatively recent addition to our lives.
...or a brush or comb, either.
Perhaps she wishes to audition for a stage revival of Hair.
Mere soap is unlikely to get the oils (that harbor the smell) out of the hair, since soap is made with fats. Shampoo is a mild detergent, not a soap.
Looks like she combs her hair with a stick.
Gosh! She looks like the subject of some of those pet rescue videos on You Tube! “Woman found with matted hair, hasn’t washed or combed it for 6 years!”
They tend to lie for attention, so I doubt it.
The Hippies are back.
Oh joy....
Stoned.
How does one become a Tiktok hair influencer?
There is someone in my neighborhood who I think does this hair care routine. She has long hair that she ties off at the back of her head, and it sticks straight out about two feet, stiff as a carp.
So she’s 27 years old and looks 45, is a hard core vegan with tattoos, and has long grey hair and presumably smells like decomposing seaweed on the beach and does not practice any, ahem, grooming if you know what I mean. What’s not to like?
Right?
I actually tried that. Did not wash my hair for 2 months.. I could take a shower and my head would not get wet. Ran off like a duck in water. It was awesome! sort of.
