Shutting down after 12 Centuries
Survived the Black Death but couldn’t outlast Boris Johnson
The current operator of the pub in St. Albans announced on Friday that they have filed for bankruptcy, blaming “a sustained period of extremely challenging trading conditions” — a similar refrain to a number of historic British pubs that have closed during the pandemic.
“Along with my team, I have tried everything to keep the pub going. However, the past two years have been unprecedented for the hospitality industry, and have defeated all of us who have been trying our hardest to ensure this multi-award-winning pub could continue trading into the future,” Christo Tofalli, who ran the pub, said in a Facebook post. “It goes without saying I am heartbroken: this pub has been so much more than just a business to me, and I feel honored to have played even a small part in its history.”
The Ye Olde Fighting Cocks in St Albans, which poured its first drink in 793, has run into financial difficulties as a direct result of the pandemic. A sad sad day for British heritage and our Hospitality sector

The Ye in this case (used as a definite article and not as the second-person pronoun) is actually pronounced thee. Interesting way was lost letters when transitioning from Olde English. True. The original letter was a thorn Þ pronounced like the "th" in "the".

No.
Direct result of ill-advised, useless restrictions imposed by overreaching government.

Thanks for additional pics. I suspect those ceiling beams have been replaced. I’ve been in a few old pubs. Ceiling beams were sway-backed.

I gotta believe the Brits could find 2Million Pounds to keep this place open. Heck, I wonder if President Trump could put something together to re-open the place.

Oh no! Some of my fondest memories of GB were at their pubs. They let owners bring their dogs in and tell you to watch your kids. Loved it.

I'm sure there are many neighboring pubs who will pick up the slack and are reveling in Schadenfreude right now.
