Having up to three cups of coffee a day has a protective effect on heart health. It also reduces the overall mortality rate and the risk of stroke.
The participants were divided into three groups: non-coffee drinkers, light to moderate coffee-drinkers and those who consumed a significant amount of coffee a day. The researchers also used MRI scans to gain a better understanding of how coffee-drinking habits affect the anatomy and functioning of the heart over time.
Professor Steffen Petersen said: "The large sample size, linked health data, and detailed heart MRI scans available in the UK Biobank offered a strong base to address this research question. According to the results, light to moderate coffee consumption is not damaging from a cardiovascular point of view, and it could be beneficial. As far as we know, this has been the largest study to date which focused on the effect of coffee on cardiovascular health."
Co-author Dr. Zahra Raisi-Estabragh, added: "Most of the participants drank either ground or instant coffee. The ground coffee in moderate amounts was associated with lower mortality risk—but this benefit was not found amongst the regular instant coffee drinkers."
Dr. Judit Simon, Ph.D. said: "Light to moderate coffee consumption was associated with a 12 percent lower risk of overall mortality, and with a 17 percent lower risk of death caused by cardiovascular diseases compared to non-coffee drinkers. In addition, from half to three cups of coffee was associated with a 21 percent lower risk of stroke."
"It's also important to highlight that even for those who were heavy coffee-drinkers, we did not find evidence of negative cardiovascular consequences,"—said Dr. Maurovich-Horvat. "However, there were no positive health benefits observed in this group—as in the group of the light to moderate drinkers."

LOL…longtime decaf drinker here, so that made me laugh. And I’ll never look at my coffee cup the same ever again.
But I know exactly what you mean. I miss the robust taste of real coffee that hasn’t had the flavor removed! But a couple days of real Joe and I’m jittery as heck and can’t get a good nights sleep. Every now and then I try the real thing ad the result is always the same.
you can get away from the bathroom by simply moving out to Californication and crapping on the street like thousands and thousands of them there

Coffee is very complex. It not the caffeine but all the other things in real coffee that provide the benefit. These are not present in instant to a large degree.

Too cups every morning. I grind them myself at local supermarket that has many choices. Been doing this for decades and am in outstanding health for an old broad. Or for anyone. More reasons I’m healthy include being slim, active, eating right, taking a handful of supplements every day.
I understand some have that issue.
I need a good cup of coffee before bed to give me the strength to sleep through the night 😉
I drink fresh ground coffee, but I don’t like most coffee either. My local store has hazelnut flavored coffee, which I do like with a few drops of stevia and a little 2% milk. Yummy. You might try that.
daily coffee, slim, active, eating right, taking a handful of supplements every day.
What about the daily two fingers of whiskey? That’s the only thing missing on your list!
Good for you! I turned 70 last summer and follow the same regimen (although I’m not quite in the “slim” category yet, but still working on it). I just got back from a good hill workout with my son — 3.4 miles and 700 feet elevation gain. The weather in Northern California this morning is absolutely perfect!
I just bought some of this on Amazon (it's in my freezer), but I'm afraid to try it! I'll either never get to sleep again, or I'll go to sleep and not wake up.
At some point you can no longer taste the great coffee taste we drink it for.
We took a year to sample coffees and eventually found one good enough to be called our “House Coffee.”
That’s one heck of a walk! I do a mile on the treadmill. Most days.
Yep, I forgot the two fingers of whiskey because I don’t like the stuff, but have red wine every night, good for the heart. My doc prescribes Resveratrol, which is essentially the same thing in pill form. Wine is so much better. Only drink wine from Washington’s Columbia Valley, delish stuff at any price and contains no sulfites, which are allowed in CA.
LOL...don’t keep us in suspense! What did you finally settle on?
“[Columbia River Valley wine] contains no sulfites, which are allowed in CA.”
I didn’t know that! We get LOTS of wine from the Columbia River Valley in North Idaho (I split time between the Bay Area and north of Coeur d’Alene, ID). Lots of great wines from that region.
I’m getting really ticked on my hikes because younger people are passing me! It wasn’t long ago I was the one passing everybody else. Grrrr.
After a year of research, we found a Honduran coffee raised without pesticides an roasted medium/dark. It is low acid. Excellent and full of flavor in our opinion. I add we’re kind of coffee snobs.
If you want a name and link, pm me and I’ll share.
“Correlation is not causation.”
Everything is better with butter!
Daughter and SIL have great house near Priest River. She is a fabulous cook and really knows her stuff about wine. I learn from her.
