Drinking coffee or tea is associated with reduced risk for stroke and dementia, with the biggest benefit associated with consuming both beverages, new research suggests.
Investigators found that individuals who drank 2 to 3 cups of coffee and 2 to 3 cups of tea per day had a 30% decrease in incidence of stroke and a 28% lower risk for dementia vs those who did not.
Synergistic Effect?
Whereas earlier studies have shown significant health benefits from moderate coffee and tea intake separately, few have examined the effect of drinking both.
Researchers enrolled 365,682 participants from the UK Biobank for the analysis of coffee and tea consumption and stroke and dementia risk and 13,352 participants for the analysis of poststroke dementia. During a median follow-up of 11.4 years, 2.8% of participants experienced a stroke and 1.4% developed dementia.
After adjusting for confounders, stroke risk was 10% lower in those who drank a half-cup to a cup of coffee per day (P < .001) and 8% lower in those who had more than two cups a day (P = .009). Tea drinkers who had more than two cups a day saw a 16% reduction in stroke (P < .001).
Those who drank both coffee and tea during the day saw the greatest benefit. Drinking 2-3 cups of coffee and 2-3 cups of tea lowered stroke risk by 32% (P < .001) and dementia risk by 28% (P = .002).
Drinking both beverages offered significantly greater benefits than drinking just coffee or tea alone, with an 11% lower risk for stroke (P < .001), an 8% lower risk for dementia (P = .001), and 18% lower risk for vascular dementia (P = .001).

You can become anemic or throw off your electrolytes, otherwise.
Tea in England is virtually always taken with cream. And coffee is the same. So, this is a very positive study for cream as well. But they don’t want to admit that.
I wonder who financed the study — the dairy industry?
It’s like some of the TV ads I’ve seen recently saying that you should/could run your dishwasher frequently, as opposed to washing by hand, because dishwashers use so little water now. I’m thinking the electric industry is paying for those ads.
I’m a cup low this morning, I thought something was off.
If most of our adult children, grandkids, friends and relatives over age fifty drank 2 to 3 cups of coffee and 2 to 3 cups of tea per day, we could never get far from a bathroom..
That would not be much of a satisfying lifetime.
…aaaand in two months time, these SAME people will come out with another “study” (taxpayer funded..) that will come to the conclusion that coffee and tea are (once again) - KILLERS!!!
How many times in our lifetime do we see the same old schtick go around and around - and STILL pay attention to these “experts”? (Who graduated college with their science degrees only three years ago…)

Interesting. Didn’t know that.
Seems like there’s a lot of stuff out there that’s good for dementia lately?
Add a sildenafil (generic of Viagra) pill to the tea and coffee and you’ll never get dementia.
On that note, I’ll have another cup of coffee!
I literally forget some days to drink coffee. I drank tea in the AM for 20 years but tea requires cream and sugar and I drink coffee black. Whereas you have tea, too often coffee has you.
I did tea in the morning for many years. Then I moved to Italy for work ... and got hooked on my morning cappuccino, and my after lunch espresso. And sometimes an after-dinner espresso. Now it’s a cup of tea once in a while, but multiple coffees every day.
Cream is at least 40% fat. Which is very healthy fat for most people. Certainly by all those ethnic English people. Skim milk is crap. It is sugar water. Most vitamins are fat soluble so when you take the fat out of milk, you are taking out half the nutrition as well. Dairy processors love selling Skim milk, that gives them dairy fat for free to make and sell butter and cheese.
All this talk of coffee inspired me to roast up some beans. Enjoying them now. Yum.
“Add a sildenafil (generic of Viagra) pill to the tea and coffee and you’ll never get dementia.”
You’ll also not get any sleep. 😆
When it comes to coffee, 6 cups (black) a day keeps the doctor away.
You’re right about skim milk vs. full-fat dairy products. Skim milk that can’t be foisted on human consumers is fed to confinement pigs to fatten them up. Dairy fat is invaluable for making good use of the fat-soluble vitamins. It’s why we eat salad with dressing, fruit with cheese, and why cooked veggies are often served with butter or a rich sauce. Alas, it’s also why good cheese is so damned expensive! PS: “American cheese” and Velveeta are not cheese.
A lot of info about dairy. I despise milk, cream, sour cream, cottage cheese, yogurt, etc., and probably haven’t had much of it since Mother’s milk.
Many members of our church when I was growing up were dairy farmers. When I’d go there to play with their kids sometimes we’d go to the creamery room and the smell gagged me. I suppose that’s where my aversion began.
(Yes; I have osteoporosis, but so does Hubby who loves dairy and has it daily.)
Coffee with milk/cream ... eeewww.
Hubby drinks Fairlife milk which is supposed to be healthier re carbs. At least that’s what his dietitian told him.
Nice to run into a similar soul. I don’t eat cheese, eggs, or drink milk. I hate them. Melted cheese on something makes me want to throw up. I have such an aversion to dairy I shake my head yes about the lactose thingy, but I don’t think that’s it.
