THE heartbroken dad of a young GAA player who died suddenly over the weekend has paid an emotional tribute to his son, saying: "It was a pleasure to have him for the nineteen and a half years we did."

Conall McGuinness, 19, from Barnstown Co Wexford ,was studying Psychology at Queens University when he sadly passed away on February 6.

The talented youngster was a member of the Wexford Minor Football panel and won a Junior B title recently playing with his local GAA club Glynn Barnstown.

Speaking with the Wexford People, his father Gerry said the Conall was a "great man" and will never be forgotten.

He said: "He’ll be remembered.

“It was a pleasure to have him for the nineteen and a half years we did. He never gave us an ounce of trouble.

"He was a great man for his friends. He was very confidential and trustworthy and was always there with a listening ear.

"He had a great sense of fair play and that was very important to him. He always wanted people to be treated fairly.”

Conall's GAA club Glynn Barntown GAA also took to Facebook to pay tribute to him, saying his death has "devastated" both teammates and mentors alike.

They wrote: "It is with great sadness that we extend our deepest sympathies to the McGuiness family on the sad passing of our young clubman Conall.

"Conall was a great addition to our club playing underage football through all age groups and representing Wexford at county minor level in 2019.

"Conall went onto play adult level with the club winning a Junior B title recently.

"The youth of our club are so important to us and to lose a young man like Conall has devastated his many mentors, teammates and friends.

An online death notice reads: The death has occurred of Conall McGuinness (Barntown, Co Wexford) , February 6, 2022, Conall, beloved son of Gerry and Alison, brother of Siobhan, Sharon, Sinead, Shaunna and Sarah; sadly missed by his loving family, brothers-in-law, uncles, aunts, grandmother Jean, niece Siofra, nephews Shane and Liam, cousins, relatives and friends."

Connell's funeral mass will take place in St Alphonsus Church in Barntown on Friday at 12 noon with a burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetary.

The family have shared a link for donations if desired to Wexford based mental health charity It's Good 2 Talk.

For us non-Irish:

Gaelic Athletic Association

The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; Irish: Cumann Lúthchleas Gael [ˈkʊmˠən̪ˠ ˈl̪ˠuː(h)xlʲəsˠ ˈɡeːl̪ˠ]; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes,[2] which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. The association also promotes Irish music and dance, as well as the Irish language.

As of 2014, the organisation had over 500,000 members worldwide,[1] and declared total revenues of €65.6 million in 2017.[3] The Games Administration Committee (GAC) of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) governing bodies organise the fixture list of Gaelic games within a GAA county or provincial councils.

Gaelic football and hurling are the most popular activities promoted by the organisation, and the most popular sports in the Republic of Ireland in terms of attendances.[4] Gaelic football is also the second most popular participation sport in Northern Ireland.[5] The women's version of these games, ladies' Gaelic football and camogie, are organised by the independent but closely linked Ladies' Gaelic Football Association and the Camogie Association of Ireland respectively. GAA Handball is the governing body for the sport of handball, while the other Gaelic sport, rounders, is managed by the GAA Rounders National Council (Irish: Comhairle Cluiche Corr na hÉireann).

Since its foundation in 1884, the association has grown to become a major influence in Irish sporting and cultural life, with considerable reach into communities throughout Ireland and among the Irish diaspora.[6]

He was studying psychology, so that might be the reason.
