Total casualties, both sides by my count are over 24,000 including over 2,700 killed.
These numbers come from historical analyses and do not match with much higher numbers reported by the New York Times on February 9, 1862.
One possible explanation is that there were much higher numbers killed or wounded in day-to-day accidents & illnesses than actual battles or skirmishes.
