WASHINGTON, Wednesday, Feb. 5.
In expectation that a vote would be had to-day in the Bright case, the galleries of the Senate Chamber were filled at an early hour, and all the available space in the Chamber was occupied by those entitled to the privilege of the floor. The interest in the proceedings was intense, and for five hours the vast concourse sat with enchained attention, awaiting the final issue.
Speeches were delivered by several Senators, and Mr. BRIGHT himself, who made a most ingenious and impressive defence, in a more temperate spirit than was to have been expected. It was not without its effect on the galleries, and at its conclusion. If his fate had depended on the popular vote, it is not improbable that it would have been different from what it was. But whatever chords of sympathy were touched by his fervent appeal, his cause was so much injured by some of his friends who followed him, that when the result of the vote was announced, there was as almost unanimous round of applause in the galleries, which was only silenced by an imperative call to order. Mr. BRIGHT's speech was well calculated to affect the vote of any Senator who was in a state of hesitancy, and he evidently intended it for the close of the performance; but he was thwarted by those friends who damaged his cause more effectually than his most vehement opponent could have done.
Mr. BRIGHT left the Senate before the vote on his expulsion was announced.
