NEWS FROM WASHINGTON: THE FINANCES OF THE GOVERNMENT; Provision for Paying the Interest on the Three Year Bonds in Coin (2/5/1862)

WASHINGTON, Tuesday, Feb. 4.

IMPORTANT NOTICES FROM THE TREASURY DEPARTMENT INTEREST TO BE PAID IN COIN. The following official notices were to-day promulgated by the Treasury Department "Holders of the Bonds of the United States, payable three years from date, the coupons of semi-annual interest thereon being due on the 19th inst., are hereby notified that provision is made for the payment in coin of all such coupons agreeably to their tenors, at the office of the Assistant Treasurer of the United States in the City of New-York. All such coupons must be presented at that office, accompanied with schedules showing the number and amount of each coupon, together with the aggregate sum of each parcel -- three full business days for examination and verification before payment."

"Notice is hereby given of the readiness of this Department to redeem the Treasury notes payable in one year from date, authorized by Act of Congress, approved Dec. 23, 1857, and the Treasury notes payable in sixty days from date, authorized by an Act of Congress, approved March 2, 1861. The interest on the Treasury notes of the above issues, will cense on the 7th day of April next, by the terms of those acts respectively."

THE FIFTY-MILLION ISSUE.

To-day the last note of the fifty-million United States notes is in the hands of the signers, and the whole work will be finished to-morrow. It is remarkable that no accident or loss has occurred in the execution of this great work.

GOOD NEWS FROM CALIFORNIA.

The Secretary of the Treasury received to-day the fallowing telegram from the Governor of California:

SACRAMENTO, Friday, Jan. 31.

I am instructed by a resolution of the Legislature of California to inform you that this State will assume and pay

The phrasing is interesting. For Union troops, “A large supply of packed pork and meal was taken possession of, and was specifically transferred to National pots and from there to National stomachs.” The rebels in contrast are “on the lookout for something to steal” and practitioners of “theft and murder.”

At least back then you knew the perspective/bias you were getting. The cloaking of it now by the mask of putative objectivity is worse.

I don’t think “fair and balanced” was ever a reality. Only the relatively recent claims to it.

Probably as a theoretical concept. Certainly not something any sane person would associate with government spending.
