Unless she is expected to receive client calls on her personal phone, her VM greeting shouldn’t matter one whit to an prospective employer.

Agreed.

I knew an old man with a growly voice like Louis Armstrong. His machine just said, “Please leave a message - and don’t forget the Blues!)

I wanted to get him to record my own; but he passed before I could ask.

[I can’t even understand what she’s saying.]

Neither could the recruiter...

It might be harsh, but she got some valuable free career advice.

Folks who are approving of her VM are part of the problem why service in retail is going down the toilet.

Yeah that hiring manager maybe needs a review.

I read the article. Some people may like that greeting, and it is kinda funny, but in a professional setting, it would rub me the wrong way, too. Imagine going into work and saying something like this out on the floor or in an office setting:

“Wazzup, wazzup, wazzup in da hizzy . . .”

I used to have my voicemail message as something like this-

Aight, here’s what’s gonna happen. You’re gonna hear a beep. Then you’re gonna speak your piece. Then I’m gonna listen to it and maybe I’ll call you back. Capice? Here comes the beep...

Meh I was young and it felt funny.

Yeah.

Of course even that still beats what I’d have if I even bothered: “don’t bother leaving a message at the beep. Whatever it is I don’t care. Bye.”

Am I the only one who thinks the manager did her a huge favor by suggesting a simple little thing she could do to increase her chances of landing a job?

It’s hard to understand what the heck she is saying. Most employers want to hire people that can communicate clearly, unless that person will working in isolation from other customers, vendors, or employees.

Exactly right. I’m shocked at how many people don’t really get that.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but I don’t think her phone message is the reason she wasn’t hired. I think it was just part of the stack of evidence against her. They shouldn’t have brought it up.

There are many times I want to give advice to people applying for jobs because you want to help them.

But, why put make them someone else’s problem?

We’ll just work harder, pay more taxes so they can live their best life on government assistance.

Neither do I. I don't see how it's an employer's business what I use as my voicemail response.

If they want me to use a phone with their preferred voicemail response, they can provide me with a company-paid phone or pay my phone bill.

It's not part of my job to supply my employer with free equipment.
