Cooling the instrument and cameras are critical. Even amateur astronomers strive to cool their cameras/sensors down in an effort to reduce noise. I don't have a dedicated CCD camera and at this point I only use DSLR consumer grade cameras which can be a bit difficult to keep cool, but there are various methods, modifications and techniques to help keep things cool.
I recently obtained this image of the M42 Nebula, using some of those basic techniques.
