MIAMI — A man and his 11-year-old grandson found a little more than they were looking for during a weekend fishing trip. The pair pulled two .50-caliber Barrett sniper rifles out of a canal near Miami.

Duane Smith told the Miami Herald he saw a YouTube video on magnet fishing and decided to give it a try on Sunday. They dropped a 5-pound magnet in the C-102 canal in southern Miami-Dade County.

“We are not talking about the same thing. .”

I am referring to the illegal rifles in the article. What are you referring to?

I wasn't questioning the presence of serial numbers. More interested in the integrity of the bore as a safe to use firearm. The serial numbers will provide traceability to the valid owners...assuming they weren't stolen at some point.

We love our 50s here in FL, but filed serials make for a problem.

Whatever. I bet you don’t file the serial numbers off your guns.

I know.

And?

These two did not purchase them from Barrett. They found them in a Florida river. Absent someone else to come forward with a lost/stolen claim... they are found goods.

I know.

And it doesn't matter.

Read the US Supreme Court opinions in Gonzales v. Raich; Justice Thomas got it right, but his was a dissenting opinion...

“The serial numbers will provide traceability to the valid owners”

The serial numbers will provide traceability to the original owners.

it's the fact that the serial numbers have been removed...

That's another argument which the initial poster never mentioned when he said they were illegal to own.......

are 50 cal barretts even available to the general public???

Yep! If your local gun shop doesn't have them in stock, they can order them.

I was in my local firearm store a couple months ago when a guy walked in and picked up his pre-ordered .50 Cal.

I asked the dealer if I could hold it and he let me. Too damn heavy to do anything with it other than use it to lift weights or target practice.......LOL!

Well - can’t prove that they were stolen.

But then I got to the part about the serial numbers...

“Florida has no laws regulating 50 caliber rifles......They’re legal to own.”

Florida has laws against possessing these rifles.

The type and caliber of the rifles does not make them illegal.
