I just tried Shell’s EV charging hub — and it's not the future I want

A gas station-style forecourt isn't necessarily the best option

I’ve always been of the opinion that you should bring EV chargers to the people, rather than asking people to come to the chargers. But admittedly charging hubs aren’t very common, and until very recently they were all too far away to experience first hand.

But at the tail end of last year, Shell opened up its first EV charging hub in Fulham, in West London. It’s still pretty out of the way for me, and the trip involves driving into the heart of the U.K.’s busiest city from nearby Reading. But it’s not so far that I couldn’t check this out for myself, just in case I’ve been totally wrong about EV charging this whole time.

And yes, for those that didn’t know, Shell the oil company is also in the EV charging business. So is BP, which is all really weird to think about.

According to Shell the Fulham hub uses 100% renewable energy, with on-site solar panels contributing around a quarter of its needs.

It was a very painless experience, only really hampered by the fact the price was so high. £0.49 ($0.66). I’m used to rapid chargers being more expensive, but Shell Recharge is the most expensive I’ve ever seen. Back home a rapid charger will cost me £0.30 to £0.35 ($0.40 to $0.47) per kWh, depending on which company’s chargers I’m using. It’s not just London-centric inflation, either, since that is an all-too real problem in the English capital.

According to ZapMap, which lists the vast majority of available chargers, nearby rapid chargers were charging no more than £0.39 ($0.52) per kWh.

-—”But what if a large group of people are evacuating from a Hurricane and they’re not ‘home’ with their extension cord?(I live in Florida)”

God’s waiting room!

I have heard stories about grandpa went blind but still drives!
Grandma would talk him through the motions!
I always thought it was BS.

On a motorcycle trip through Florida, a police checkpoint the cop says it is common down there and they had a recent fatal accident where grandma did not see the guy on the motorcycle; hence the license check.

So, I’m thinking it will be a very slow evacuation with so many blind drivers.

Level 3 (50kW Rapid): 82 kWh battery 1h 5m 1h 48m

Tesla’s superchargers are 250 kw.

Besides, 99.5% of daily driving is short distance enabling the owner only needing to top off while sleeping.

Actually that applies to gas cars.

LOL! 50kw! Tesla is doing 250! Porsche is doing 350!

Now Porsche is following Tesla’s lead and announcing its own network to complement one of those third-party networks, Ionity, in Europe:

Porsche is planning its own fast-charging stations along the most important European major highways and motorways. These will offer customers a high-quality, brand-appropriate charging experience while complementing the Ionity network. A unique design will showcase the special character of the Porsche fast-charging stations to the outside world.

The German automaker says that each station will have “between six and 12 charging points with a charging capacity of 350 kW and more.”

I’ll take your word for it about VA now. It’s cheaper for sure. In Georgia, I only saw it on feeds and sub panels when I was doing refurbs and installs. And as I stated, at least until around 2000 or so it was that way. Haven’t looked in new housing now, but that, along with other things like plumbing supply lines, water lines in outside walls, would be purchase discriminators for me. It’s just easier to deal with and not have to worry about the potentials noted here: https://codecheck.com/aluminum-wiring/

Florida's leading the country in radical conservative ideology - - I'm amazed you would push an old negative Florida stereotype.

OK, so we'll change the 'state' and ask the same question about electric car charging:

Let's say large numbers of brain-dead white liberal 'elites' from California (with their drug paraphernalia stuffed up their asses and three copies of the Communists Manifest strapped to their mountain bikes on top of their electric cars) - have to evacuate a large fire caused by an equally large earthquake... would there be a serious charging issue>

Pls, do not get your undies in a bunch!

I have to decompress when I can, as we in northern Illinois await yet another KILLER SNOWSTORM! Snowmageddon, Snowpocalypse, and Snowzilla...
That was yesterday, today now it is to be 1 in on Tue, 2.5 on Wed, and 1 on Thursday... AND DECREASING.

Looks like a messy nothing-burger.

So relax and enjoy your sunshine, before the frozen iguanas get you.

I gotta run and check the snowblower gas...

Electric cars limit the amount of traveling you can do. IOW it restricts freedom of movement

How does that work?
Average US driver only covers 25.9 miles per day?

I do more than that on a bicycle most days of the year and probably close to the same speed.

A trip to my hometown would exceed the limit of even the best car. Only 2.5 hours away

I’ll be kind - oh, and it’s cold here today too. Just checked the temps and we’re sitting at 63...

Rather than dealing with snow and liberals - consider moving to Florida. We’re always happy when conservatives make Florida home.

!60 mph is way above posted. Be safe.

With up to 412-miles of estimated driving range—depending upon model—the S can easily be used for long drives, and the 1020-hp Plaid version can deliver supercar acceleration while seating four adults

“Average US driver only covers 25.9 miles per day?”

That is 1.5 hours with a 6.6 kw charger. About $1.00 here in SW Florida.

That is average.

For Tesla Model 3: 1 hour and $0.81

Traveling north from L.A. after a Thanksgiving weekend, the wait at the gas station over an hour. Eating at In-n-Out added another hour.
