“It is difficult to find peace in the woods when armed frogmen might be lurking behind every tree,” lawyers for the Whidbey Environmental Action Network, the group behind the lawsuit against the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission, argued in a legal brief filed last month.
The Navy has used Washington state coastal parks for over 30 years for SEAL cold water training and other special operations exercises, with leaders saying the area offers the perfect environment to simulate what the elite forces may encounter on difficult operations overseas.
“I do not care to catch a glimpse of apparently armed men skulking around and I DEFINITELY do not want to risk having my young grandchildren see such a sight,” a resident wrote...
“In these days of great division in our civil society, we don’t need stealthy men in camo uniforms toting toy guns around our State and County Parks,” another commenter said. “People frequent parks to escape tension, not to encounter more. Keep the Navy commando training out of our parks!”
“The Navy’s plan is to use larger, gasoline-powered UAV’s as well as smaller, electric-powered types. This offers significant potential for direct and indirect injury to birds as well as auditory disruption to the experience of park visitors.”

I saw them train when I was a the NavAmphib Base at Coronado in 1968. Just the UDT portion of the course is murder. I was never tempted. They are all better men than I am and my hat is off to them.

Yes, in late July-August 67 Navy UDT types who were at Little Creek, VA were in my airborne course at Fort Benning. Darn those men could run. At the end of tower week, we had a 2 mile plus or so run. I lost out to a Navy officer. The truth is all Special Ops types have a purpose. At the start of the Special Forces Course for both officers and enlisted we had a navigation test. That test was mostly in a swamp plus other difficult terrain to navigate. I took about 4 hours to finish. Some were still trying after 8 hours. If no pass-No SF. These training areas serve a purpose.
A couple of circuits of the training facility, you’re familiarized. You learn more by training in unfamiliar territory.
