I don’t use Chrome or Google.... if I wanted the Chinese to have all my private and business information, I would just email it directly to them.....
Proceed at your own risk.
Too many words to say what could be said in two lines. Pro, cheap and it can do stuff. Con, cheap and it has to be connected to the internet and to Google. The answer to the question is only yes if you want a kid to have a computer for school. Otherwise unequivocally NO.
Depending on where I’m working, I switch between an iMac, a Windows laptop, an iPhone and an iPad — but one thing I’ve noticed about all these devices is that much of what I’m doing on them is now being done in the Chrome browser.

I bought a chrome book about 10 years ago. I absolutely loved it. It was bulletproof and virus proof. Later I migrated to a company owned laptop. I’m now retired and very interested in getting another Chromebook. But I did my research and to my surprise I found out that you can use Microsoft 365 products on a Chromebook.
I have had much better luck trusting the cloud to keep my documents than I ever did with hard drives that crashed permanently losing my data.
And as for trusting google? I’m sure you would agree the benefits of a tried and true Google browser far outweighs any Microsoft Internet explorer version ever produced.
I got a very low-end HP Chromebook as a "gift" for listening to a 30-minute sales spiel on Google Cloud a few years ago. It's a useful ultra-portable, halfway between my MacBook (a real computer) and my iPad (tablet).
*ShadowAce* Not mentioned in the article is that you can download and run a Linux OS environment on a Chromebook, in a VM/container. It's a Debian (Ubuntu-ish) distro and really quite good. Having that running Bash sessions on the same desktop as the other ChromeOS applications is pretty cool.
I don't use ChromeOS much, but it's handy for the things I use it for.
Same here. Chromebook has been an excellent choice for my parents. No more virus issues. No hassle. It’s turned on every time, every day for them for the last 6 or 7 years without fail.
So impressed I got a few for myself. Been using their Acer brand. $150 new.
I bought an acer about 10 years ago, and then another about 2 years ago after my daughter spilled a drink on the keyboard. Acer is made in Taiwan not PRC so that was a big plus. Unfortunately the monitor I bought from them is CCP made.
You will be shocked how many Chromebooks aka Clonebooks aka Clownbooks have an upcoming expiration date..

They also make it easy on the newer Chromebooks to run Linux. One of the great bargains in the world of technology.

I bought one for the grandkids to use when visiting, it has a waterproof keyboard, Also known to be ice tea proof and milk proof.
And no matter what the grandkids managed to get into a few keyclicks a Chromebook POWERWASH and good to go.
Now my wife uses it as her primary device.

Is there a tech list?
Yes, Shadow Ace (All things techie), Dayglored (Windows) and Swordmaker (Apple) have them........
Oh, I'm sure the cloud keeps your documents. Me, I back up obsessively. Portable hard drives and usb's all over the place. But in the cloud, what's in them would be all over the place.
And as for trusting google? I’m sure you would agree the benefits of a tried and true Google browser far outweighs any Microsoft Internet explorer version ever produced.
I try to avoid both the devil and the deep blue sea. Haven't been in spitting distance of IE since I was 10 years old, and never used Chrome at all.
Thanks for the ping.
I’ve got a relatively new HP Chromebook. It has a power issue. When the power gets down to some unknown low percent, there is zero warning, it just shuts down. It becomes a brick. I’ve been lucky that after 2 days it powered up again. A second time this happened it powered up after 4 days.
Also, the headphone jack doesn’t work. This thing is a dog. Unfortunately I bought it for $100 from my roommate who decided he didn’t like it just a few days after his own purchase. So I got no warranty.
Go to HP warranty on the internet and put in your serial number
I’ve been staring at one of those endless hourglass icons on HP support since about 5 minutes after you posted your suggestion.
Sumthin to keep in mind while looking over these kinds of products.
