Jean, a 73-year-old grandmother, was at her Long Island home Thursday morning when she received a phone call from a man claiming to be her grandson. He was in jail for drunken driving, he said. He needed her help posting an $8,000 bail.
But there was one problem, Jean thought — her grandsons are far too young to drive. It was a scam. So Jean decided to swindle the swindler.
“I knew he was a real scammer. I just knew he wasn’t going to scam me,” Jean told WCBS, which identified her only by her first name.
Jean played along, eventually inviting an apparent bail bondsman to pick up the cash from her house. But it was a setup, and moments after Jean handed over an envelope stuffed with paper towels, police tackled the man to the ground.
Joshua Estrella Gomez, 28, was arrested and charged with attempted grand larceny in the third degree, according to the Nassau County Police Department. Gomez could not be reached for comment, and it is unclear whether he has an attorney.

Stupid to invite him to her home. He’s going to get out. In New York, even murder won’t get you jail time.
She should have just hung up.
My mom had the same kind of call a few years ago.
She has a unique nickname all the grands call her. She knew it was a scam.
I hate it when someone posts something and you go to read it and find out you need to pay to read it.
Happy ending!
Another approach would have been to, after having received the phone call, cry out: “Jimmy, you fool! You know the Mob has me bugged and can trace this call! You being a man of a thousand faces can’t save you this time!”
Nice touch, slamming him to the ground. A little prior planning and some dog poop could have been in place.
There is a Dragnet episode similar to this.
An older lady knew about a scam going around and called Friday and Gannon to catch him at her house. Gannon pretended to be her son.
I forget what the scam was.
Not everyone is cowardly, besides every arrest requires a criminal complaint.
I’m glad her counter scheme worked out, but she should never have permitted her face and the outside of her dwelling to be photographed with the story.
I’m inclined to think the reporter has done this on purpose.
Some folks will impulsively side with ‘the underdog’ even when that ‘underdog’ is a thief willing to steal from the eldery.
I think their point was the police could have put her in a place that wasn’t her home and maybe they did.
“Santino, I already helped you bury that dead hooker. I ain’t going to help you bury another.”
Yeah, but more importantly, does he have his Arrest Warrant and Deportation Papers on him for ID?
Or break down in tears sobbing: “Oh, baby, why did you call? They’ll find us now! We’re dead, we’re all dead!” then hang up.
Hate to say it, but she is a dead woman walking. Stupid #1 to not just hang up. Stupid #2 to go on the news to rub it in the gang’s faces. MS134 is HUGE on Long Island.
“Stupid to invite him to her home.”
Absolutely! I can’t believe the police didn’t tell her that. At least use a fake address and have a policewoman there pretending to be her.
It isn’t about being a coward, it’s about being smart.
She could have met him at the mall or some place else away from home.
Absolutely, somebody else’s home.
Walmart parking lots always work well for these exchanges.
