Stupid to invite him to her home. He’s going to get out. In New York, even murder won’t get you jail time.
She should have just hung up.
My mom had the same kind of call a few years ago.
She has a unique nickname all the grands call her. She knew it was a scam.
I hate it when someone posts something and you go to read it and find out you need to pay to read it.
Happy ending!
Another approach would have been to, after having received the phone call, cry out: “Jimmy, you fool! You know the Mob has me bugged and can trace this call! You being a man of a thousand faces can’t save you this time!”
Nice touch, slamming him to the ground. A little prior planning and some dog poop could have been in place.
There is a Dragnet episode similar to this.
An older lady knew about a scam going around and called Friday and Gannon to catch him at her house. Gannon pretended to be her son.
I forget what the scam was.
I’m glad her counter scheme worked out, but she should never have permitted her face and the outside of her dwelling to be photographed with the story.
I’m inclined to think the reporter has done this on purpose.
Some folks will impulsively side with ‘the underdog’ even when that ‘underdog’ is a thief willing to steal from the eldery.
Yeah, but more importantly, does he have his Arrest Warrant and Deportation Papers on him for ID?
Hate to say it, but she is a dead woman walking. Stupid #1 to not just hang up. Stupid #2 to go on the news to rub it in the gang’s faces. MS134 is HUGE on Long Island.
My Mother had a similar phone call. She wasn’t that aware and when the caller identified himself as her “grandson” my Mom blurted out “oh James, is that you?” Falling right into the trap of divulging a family members name, leading to the perpetuation of the scam.
Long story short, I went to my children’s school and demanded that they all leave class and show their physical presence in the office of the school so I could assure my Mother that it was a scam.
My mom and dad almost fell for this 15 years ago. The guy at the local food lion stopped them from sending the money. They then called my brother whom said grandson said not to call and found out he was with my nephew. They almost wired 15k to new york to get him out of jail.
Those jackles prey on the elderly ever day.
Stupido for all the reasons posted. Received several calls like this. I like to say “YOU’RE OUT OF JAIL?”
She should have pulled a “Chris Hansen” and had him “take a seat”.
He probably illegal crossed the southern boarder not long ago.
