The global warming question that can change people’s minds
American Thinker ^ | 01/21/2022 | Selwyn Duke

Late last year, I got into a discussion with a fellow who was quite sold on the idea that man’s activities were warming the Earth. While not a hardcore ideologue, it was apparent the gentleman had accepted the climate change narrative presented by mainstream media and believed we truly were imperiling the planet. I didn’t say much to him initially, as we were engaged in some recreation, but later on, I resurrected the topic and told him I just wanted to pose one question.

“What is the ideal average temperature of the Earth”? I asked.

It was clear he was without an answer, so I explained my rationale. “If we don’t know what the Earth’s ideal average temperature is,” I stated, “how can we know if a given type of climate change — whether naturally occurring or induced by man — is good or bad? After all, we can’t then know whether it’s bringing us closer to or moving us further away from that ideal temperature.”

It was as if a little light bulb had lit up in his head, and he said, “You know, that’s a good question!”

I haven’t seen the man since, as we were just two ships passing in the night, and I don’t know how his thinking has evolved (or regressed) between then and now. I do know, however, that someone who’d seemed so confident and perhaps even unbending in his position had his mind opened with one simple question and a 20-second explanation.

Of course, part of the question’s beauty is that no one can answer it. There is no “ideal” average Earth temperature, only a range within which it must remain for life as we know it to exist. At the spectrum’s lower end, polar creatures proliferate; at its higher end, tropical animals do

My question that stops them is What industrial activity brought us out of the last ice age?

But... but... butt... Oceans are rising as we speak! Whole continents will turn into deserts! Dodo birds will rise from the grave and burn down cities with their firey breath! Hurricanes will spawn every other month on a direct track for black people.

I have posed the “ideal worldwide average temp” question to very hardcore climate folks who view it as a religion. Their heads explode and they just go all freakout mode. I do it for sport.

Just toss these on the table and tell them you’ll wait for the answers:

1. Define the “correct” temperature range for the planet.

2. Define the “correct” humidity range for the planet.

3. Define the “correct” mean sea level for the planet.

4. Define the “correct” amount of precipitation for the planet.

5. Define the “correct” makeup of the atmosphere.

6. Define the “correct” amount of sea ice at the N/S poles.

7. Define/explain past glaciation and subsequent warming without any input from humans.

The maddening part is that there is not even such a thing as the temperature of Earth. Its a dynamic system with myriads of different temperatures at different locations and times that we can at best average together with crude data into a crude fairly meaningless calculation. The calculation can be done numerous ways, and so a technically competent but morally deficient authority can make the stat fit any damn model they want.

I like to ask the question “How is natural climate change distinguished from man caused”? And then I remind them that the post hoc fallacy is just that; a fallacy. Coincidental timing does not establish a causal relationship.

The earth has been warming and cooling for millions of years.

My attempt at being a tree hugger.

You are experiencing global warming, without it, the temp would be a minus 26 degree's.

Stay frosty my friend.

71° in Phoenix today. A couple of degrees above average. Feeling that global warming.

Talking to a global warming cultist is like trying to convince a flat earther that the world is round. No amount of demonstrable evidence will change their mind.

Better questions:
Q: If sea levels are truly rising, how come comparing coastal photos taken in the 1800’s show sea levels same as today?
Q: Can you name one energy source...available NOW that can handle the power demands for the next 100 years?
Q: Why are we spending billions to investigate how to capture CO2 in minuscule levels when one volcano eruption negates all the effort?

Excellent! I remind people that we are in an ice age since the planet has been cooling since it was molten rock 4.5 billion years ago. 😁

Another question to ask is “how much of the atmosphere does man’s co2 occupy”? (Answer, just 0.00136%)

Then ask how just 0.00136% of the atmosphere can possibly be responsible for heating up an entire open planet. Explain that it woild be like being naked in a below zero environment, except for 0.00136% of your body covered by a piece of cloth, and expecting that it will cause you to overheat catastrophically

I prefer asking “What should the average global temperature be?” and after they are stumped for a few seconds ask them “ if you don’t know then tell me if it should be higher or lower than it is now?” “and by how many degrees?” and then ask “how do you know that?”

At best, all they can come up with is 2 degrees less than it is today (IF they know that temps, have climbed a mere degree or so in the last 1000 years or whatever)

Then ask them why life flourished when atmospheric co2 was over 1000 ppm in the last, and why we should be afraid of America 400 or so ppm now
