Can a Vice President serve two terms as President under the Constitution?
The reason I'm asking is because Trump/DeSantis is an unbeatable team and, if DeSantis became VP for Trump's second term, could he then run for two terms as President or is limited to one term as President because he served one term as VP?
Of course, if the George Bush the Elder won in ‘92, he would have done just that.
Richard Nixon was elected for two terms after being the vp under Dwight Eisenhower.
Nixon had two terms as VP, then two as president, the second one unfinished.
I’m happy to hear that, because that’s really the unstoppable ticket if DeSantis can be patient for one term.
The 22nd Amendment covers only the Presidency. Technically, someone could be Vice-President for any number of terms under different Presidents, then still have two terms as President.
Of course, the trivia question here is how long, in total, can a person be President under the current rules?
Not only is this a worthless vanity it can also be easily be answered with a casual reading of the constitution. Yes. In fact even a simple google search can answer you question. Unlikely but the answer is yes. Do you post lots of vanities and click bait? Do I need to invite HG to mock you and cause grief because I feel like I should.
Being VP has no bearing on how many terms you can serve as President, unless the President dies or can no longer fullfil his duties and the VP takes over. If a VP serves out the remainder of a President’s term, then it matters when he/she took over. Take over during the first two years, you can only serve one full term, if you win the next election. Take over during the final two years then you can serve two full terms, if you win both elections.
Have you ever read a post that had to be the Babylon Bee, but wasn’t? That’s how I felt when I discovered your post wasn’t Humblegunner.
Yes.
FYI: https://constitutioncenter.org/interactive-constitution/amendment/amendment-xxii
This is the applicable amendment.
Have heard a President can serve 10 years. No more than half of a president’s term. More than 10 years? I’ve heard no. Definitely an interesting subject to research. Johnson could have been President for 9 years and two months if elected again, the last 14 months of Kennedy’s term and two elections.
I’m a Canadian who loves America and wishes to understand it.
Google would not be as truthful on the matter as Freepers would?
No. I don’t post many vanity posts.
10 years.
Nixon was unfairly driven from office in 1974, almost two years after destroying McGovern in the Presidential Election of 1972. The democrats got a lot of Watergate babies elected in the 1974 midterm elections. The democrats had a brief victory short term, 6 years later President Reagan had his hand on the Bible and was reciting the oath of office.
Trump is “Nixon’s revenge” on steroids, the democrats look like petty buffoons in their political battles against Trump.
I’m 50 years old & it gives me great pleasure, knowing some young hair head punk who “cut his teeth” hating Nixon in the 1970’s, is going to die old, irate, with slobber on his bib, poop in his diaper, in a care home, as Trump becomes our 47th President in January 2025.
Sometimes revenge takes awhile.
The Constitution only allows someone to be elected twice; it is not clear to me if he could serve longer than the two terms plus half as an elevated VP if he was ‘appointed’ - like Ford. Could Harris resign, be replaced as VP by an appointed Obama, then Biden be removed for inability to function, elevating Obama to most of a third term?
Yes, Biden has 12 more months ... then Kamala for 10 years.
Maybe 9 years, 364 days
True but a person is ineligible to be elected for a third after serving two terms. This is mostly to save a VP who had to step into the job in an emergency from losing a term. But if their fill in term is two years and one day ( or more ), it counts a full term.
Lol. Love / hate HG but he is a FR treasure.
You’re right, Trump would be 45 and 47, just as Cleveland was 22 and 24.
Searching on google (I know it makes me need a shower)- “ can a president serve more than 8 years”
The Twenty-Second Amendment says a person can only be elected to be president two times for a total of eight years. It does make it possible for a person to serve up to ten years as president. This can happen if a person (most likely the Vice-President) takes over for a president who can no longer serve their term.
