I recently wrote to my United States senator, a Republican NeverTrump, respectfully asking why the January 6 detainees are still in jail, with many still in solitary and not arraigned for what was essentially trespassing on public property (forgetting for the moment the role of FBI instigators). (Incidentally, we should all be writing.) His reply saddened me profoundly. I received back a two-page harangue of how horrible January 6 was and how it imperiled our democracy. Buried within that harangue were unexpected admissions about the unconstitutional conditions in which far more prisoners are held than most people realize. Surprisingly enough, these admissions gave me hope.
For anyone who lived through Election Night 2020, and watched Trump winning comfortably at 11:00 P.M. EST, only to lose that massive lead by the following morning, skepticism about the election will always remain intense. (And it seems more people are getting skeptical by the day.) That skepticism is hardened by stories of municipalities that actually stopped counting during the night and reopened with large Biden pluralities.
This sense of wrongdoing doesn't justify trespassing and certainly doesn't justify vandalism. But what happened on January 6 still pales in comparison to the carnage that BLM and Antifa wreaked on many American cities and towns the previous summer — and without cost to its perpetrators in most cases. So a white-hot rage remains in many Americans.
But back to my senator's curious reply. After a lengthy harangue about Jan. 6, the depraved perpetrators, and the evil Donald Trump, he provided two very odd statements. First, he informed me that 570 people are still held in D.C.'s jails.
Five hundred seventy! I had no idea that so many were incarcerated for so long, without trial.

But it was “patriots”.
Absolutely. Our betters showed up at the captiol on 1/6 to contest our disenfranchisement in an election stolen in a fully bipartisan manner. Meanwhile, us keyboard commandos sit in our comfy armchairs while violent Marxists burn our cites, seize our government and destroy our near 250 years of American heritage.
They don’t call the GOP the Stupid Party because of who we elect. Weak and stupid voters will be the death of this country. Buy a clue before its too late, FRiend.
The federal courthouse was fire bombed on a daily basis for over a month in Portland. 40 days in a row I believe. If that isn’t a coordinated criminal conspiracy and insurrection nothing this. Yet we get crickets on that subject from the DOJ and the Trump hating crowd.
I have acquired many “clues”. I have no love for violence, riots or destruction. I have no love for those who disobey law enforcement. The “patriots” acted like BLM and ANTIFA. Other than not burning the building, virtually everything else was the same.
It does justify lamp post decoration. But NO SITTING AT THEIR DESKS.
That would be going too far.
GMTA. 🙂
But it is nice to see you have not changed one little bit in all your years here.
I believe you’re looking at this through a tribal lense instead of impartial. If you took film clips of Portland and Jan 6th and showed them to someone who didn’t know the parties involved, my guess is they would see little difference.
If you showed the entire thing of both no one could ever mistake the two.
Perhaps that is your problem.
Too many "clips" not enough of seeing the whole thing.
If you haven't seen the documentary "Capitol Punishment" it covers this story extremely well. I found a link to it here.
Funny. This is what the President said in a clip on his Twitter account: “Like all Americans, I am outraged by the violence, lawlessness, and mayhem,” Trump said..

Yet you are just fine with a stolen election that “disobeys” the Constitution.
Sorry, there is no moral equivalence between the disenfranchisement of over 70 million GOP voters and a few broken windows in the capitol.
You are sadly mistaken if you think that that capitol police officer wouldn’t happily shoot you and yours dead at a GOP rally if he fancied doing it. Our political enemies wish us dead and it is clear from your posts you have no clue about fact.
As Trump said on Jan. 7th: “Like all Americans, I am outraged by the violence, lawlessness, and mayhem.”
Absolutely. How can you not be outraged by the execution of Ashli Babbitt by our government?
He was referring to the actions of those who acted like BLM and ANTIFA. Since so many say those who breached were one or the other, which of the 2 was Ashli?
