As the omicron variant of the coronavirus continues to surge onboard cruise ships, forcing several cruise lines to cancel and postpone voyages, Atlantis Events, a gay and lesbian tour operator, is preparing to launch one of its biggest events Sunday: a 4,700-person Caribbean cruise marking the company’s 30th anniversary.
Even as the pandemic is raging around the world and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a stark warning telling Americans to avoid travel on cruise ships, regardless of their vaccination status, Atlantis insists that its vaccination mandate, testing requirements and health protocols are enough to provide a safe environment for guests throughout the voyage. Many passengers are convinced.
“It’s time to start living our lives again, and vaccines and tests allow us to do that. This isn’t COVID 2020,” said Andre Mayer, a graphic designer from Germany who paid more than $4,000 for the weeklong cruise on board Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas. “This is going to be the wildest party for our community in two years. I’m talking dirty dancing, sex, drugs, raves, orgies and sweet, sweet freedom.”
For the hundreds of cruise passengers who contracted the coronavirus on board other ships in recent weeks, many falling ill and spending days in quarantine, their experience couldn’t have been further from the carefree vacation that Mayer anticipates.
For some booked on the anniversary cruise and other Atlantis events, these reports and the omicron wave of the virus are causing them to reconsider their plans.
“The COVID reality changes so quickly that there needs to be more flexibility,” said Aiden Morgan, a 44-year-old dance teacher from Boston. Morgan sold his ticket for the Atlantis Tropical Americas Cruise later this month on Facebook but was only offered $1,480 for his $3,800 ticket.

you’ve got that right!
I’m just thinking about the headline should it be an article about a large group of conservatives together on a cruise.
“Death Trap Awaits A Group of Trump Supporters as they Tempt Fate on An Ill-Advised Cruise”
69. Well, at least the ramming ship sailed in a straight line. /sarc
Sounds like they’ve decided they don’t have to worry about Omicron virus. Derides the articles I’ve read today about
It also passes through body fluids so what could go wrong?
Interesting post! I will avoid Olivia cruises.
Your bad, bagster!
But your post reminded me of a joke I told my uncle, second cousin, and his father back in July of 1998....
Q: “Why does the Secret Service call Bill Clinton’s penis the Titanic?”
A: “Because over 1500 people went down on it!”
It is known.

Ha. Just one question. Who remembers what joke they told 54 years ago and who was in the room? July is oddly specific. I can't remember the smack I talked ten minutes ago.

People say I have an excellent memory.
It was July 31, 1998, about 23 1/2 years ago. I told the joke as we were riding in a car on the way to the Staples store near the mall in Bangor, Maine.
My uncle was visiting from Long Island and announced he was going to buy me a computer....my very first. So off we went.
The summertime is when most people from out of state visit Maine.
I’m pretty good with dates. I also remember what happened on this date, January 17th... in 1994, just because it was a big news story.....the Northridge earthquake at 4:31 AM Pacific time.
I used to live in California so earthquake news always gets my attention.
The cruise industry must be absolutely desperate to troll forums like “free republic” looking for suckers to buy tickets. (Of course, you probably will sell a few.)
I understand that the cruise Lines will attract cruisers; no matter how many restrictions are put on the cruisers, or how the virus spreads.
What I have trouble understanding is that since the Lines have alienated people who are not vaccinated, and they are bringing in new ships, and have over a year of no income and borrowing money to stay afloat, and are running into an inflationary period, and are now facing a new virus, how can they possibly continue in a business-as-usual way of operating, without scaling back their businesses in a form of chapter 11 bankruptcy. - Tom
First note this Monday is Oasis ship is not on its original itinerary. On its way to Mehico, not Eastern Caribbean.
I noticed two conflicting stories on the "Oasis" heading in opposite directions, one showing it heading to St Maarten the other showing it heading in the opposite direction to Roatan.
I believe you are correct and it is heading for Mexico in an Itinerary change.
"Oasis" was the Royal Caribbean ship that just completed the 4700 passenger homosexual trip. - Tom
A fool and his money are soon parted.

From date deadlines for testing it suggested the trip STARTED January 16th.
It should be interesting when it gets back. -Tom
I saw it at Coxen Hole today — appropriate name I guess, I wouldn’t know. I do say NO thou.
