The Godfather will return to select movie theaters in honor of its 50th anniversary.
Paramount Pictures said in a press release Thursday that the 1972 film will have a limited theatrical release at AMC Theatres in the United States.
The Godfather will screen in Dolby Vision and Dolby Cinema beginning Feb. 22.
In addition, The Godfather trilogy -- The Godfather (1972), The Godfather Part II (1974) and The Godfather Part III (1990) -- has been restored and will be available in 4K Ultra HD for the first time beginning March 22. The films are based on Mario Puzo's novel The Godfather.
"I am very proud of The Godfather, which certainly defined the first third of my creative life," director Francis Ford Coppola said in a statement. "With this 50th anniversary tribute, I'm especially proud Mario Puzo's The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone is included, as it captures Mario and my original vision in definitively concluding our epic trilogy."
"It's also gratifying to celebrate this milestone with Paramount alongside the wonderful fans who've loved it for decades, younger generations who still find it relevant today, and those who will discover it for the first time," he added.
The Godfather stars Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Richard Castellano, Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton. Pacino and Keaton went on to star in The Godfather Part II and The Godfather Part III, both also directed by Coppola.
The scene where they use Febreze to clean up the explosion site?
Oranges = I have a bad feeling about this.
They usually do. I remember Thanksgiving day Godfather marathons that would just play the first two films over and over again, like the third didn’t exist!
I personally like the theater experience.
The problem with 3 is that Pacino played Michael completely differently, it was hard to believe this was the same Michael from the first 2 GF movies, I know he had some remorse over the things he did, but it was just too much of a change to be believable.
The strangers don’t interest me. The really big screen does. I first saw the Godfather at the age of 34, on the 25th Anniversary re-release, and it may a big difference in my ability to appreciate the movie, seeing it in the format it was filmed for. Maybe if I had a 72” screen and a proper sound system I would feel differently, but I don’t.
Now I have to wait a couple of years to see Godfather II properly.
Leave the gun. Take the Cannoli.

There is a certain gestalt experience in watching a film with a large audience of strangers?

I remember that watching the “Terminator 2” movie, way back when, in a theater with a largely black audience. That audience was engaged.
It seems all Hollywood has are remakes of old franchises
“all Hollywood has are remakes of old franchises”
That and comic book movies.....and they ruined that with their woke BS.
Do you have to wear a mask in the theater? These are LONG movies.
O M G!!!! Stoked. Buying tickets now!
No it doesnt.
Castellano was the real-life nephew of Big Paulie. Couldn’t hurt to have a bona-fide gangster relative in a gangster movie. There were a few of em in the movie - heard that certain ‘elements’(Joe Colombo Sr.)in NYC made Coppola an offer he couldn’t refuse. The guy that played Luca Brasi was perfectly cast for his role.
Saw it in a theater when it first came out and many times since. Every minute of it is classic.
Here’s hoping Coppola doesn’t change all the guns to walkie-talkies with this like Steven Spielberg did with “ET.”
