SCOTTISH EXPATS may struggle to celebrate Burns Night this year with the "Great Chieftain o' the Puddin-race" thanks to rules imposed by a timorous EU after Brexit.
Haggis makers have said that it is now easier to export their wares to Canada than Europe because of red tape around imports entering the bloc. Macsween, a household haggis name, said exports to the EU would be halved this year.
Caledonians in Europe now face missing out on the traditional dish served at Burns Night, held in honour of the Scottish poet and namesake on January 25.
Since post-Brexit arrangements came into effect on December 31, 2020, haggis has faced EU export rules for products of animal origins coming from non-EU countries.
James MacSween, the managing director of the family firm which leads the market, told the Telegraph: “It has become significantly more difficult to do just routine trade into Europe.”
“It is challenging to get stuff into Europe. There’s no denying it.”
Is there a lot of international demand for haggis?
This time of year there is; Burns Night is January 25.
Our local Scottish Society is celebrating on the 22d, with our homegrown haggis.
It’s on some lists in the UK as one of the 10 least liked foods. Jellied eel was on the list I saw also (just looking at the picture of jellied eel induced stomach spasms).

Probably a lot more in Canada, since there are almost as many Scottish Canadians as there are actual Scots. I dare say its more than there are people living in the EU who are Scottish or of Scottish descent.
Have you ever been to the UK? Everything was burnt beyond recognition, except for the Fish and Chips which were always 3/4 cooked in cold oil. The food is so bad that if it werent for kippers at breakfast, jellied eels for lunch, and a kidney pie for supper a man might starve to death. Thats probably the real reason for all that bad beer, its the only thing that keeps them alive.
There should be, its not bad. Americans can be silly creatures, there are more things to eat in this world beyond skinless hot dogs, boxed macaroni & cheese, and frozen pizzas.

Export Haggis? Why? Grannies ain’t got enough time between bingo outings anymore?
My Uncle got salted stockfish every yuletide as far back as I recall up until he passed on.
I’m sure it’s the same with tamales.
Exported Haggis, next they’ll be buying scrapple at the supermarket...

The FDA doesn’t allow traditionally made haggis to be imported because of the minced sheep lungs, but if you can find your own...
