Sampson Boat Company - TALLY HO Rebuilding a 1910 Gaff Cutter (binge watch warning)
youtube ^ | Series Start JUNE 15, 2017 | LEO SAMPSON GOOLDEN

Posted on 01/11/2022 3:53:52 PM PST by WeaslesRippedMyFlesh

I’m on a mission to rebuild a 109-year old English sailing yacht called Tally Ho.

Designed by Albert Strange in 1909, she is a well-known and important historic vessel – but after many adventures she was left in a remote port in Oregon to rot for decades, despite some valiant attempts to rescue her.

I bought her and moved her to the Olympic Peninsular earlier this year, and am now starting to rebuild her from the keel up. Eventually I hope to sail her back to the UK.

I have been watching Leo weekly since he went to Georgia to get the Live Oak planking for the boat.

My BIL is a retired finish carpenter and watches Episodes when he visits. We watch other boat building channels and often comment to each other that the way they are doing it isn’t how Leo would do it.

The methods and techniques used to build Tally HO are fascinating. I also like the way he takes the time to explain why things are done a certain way and what their function is in the overall design of the boat.

Have not seen his girlfriend in many months. Enjoyed it when she showed up.

“The road to hell is paved with good wooden boats.”

But more power to him in his glorious endeavor.

It is more of a rebuild than a restoration. The only bit of original wood that was salvaged was a portion of the transom.

The rebuild is authentic to the original ship blueprints which he has used for everything throughout this process.

Correction to #21. The Live Oak was used for the boat frames not the planking.

And all the research they did, and the old equipment they brought back to life.

My brother in law and a friend of his repaired a speedboat by sealing a split in the bow. They took the boat out to lake Minnetonka and the seam split open and the boat sank. The two were rescued. I am not sure the boat is still on the bottom.

“Dedication. Perseverance. Look what you can do when you put your mind to it.”

Yep - it is pretty impressive. Unbelievable almost.
