The parents of a five-time Jeopardy! champion are suing for medical malpractice after their 24-year-old son died in February following colorectal surgery.
Brayden Smith was considered the 'last great champion' of legendary host Alex Trebek, who died on November 8, 2020, age 80.
Smith taped his final appearances in October 2020, and died of blood clots to his lungs in February 2021, three weeks after surgery to treat his ulcerative colitis.
The Nevada-born contestant's death shocked fans of the show, and on Monday The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that his family were suing two hospitals in their home town of Henderson, Nevada.
Scott and Debbie Smith filed the lawsuit against Dignity Health; the hospital in Henderson, Nevada, where he was operated on - St. Rose Dominican Hospital, Siena campus; Fidelity Home Health Services; two physicians; and the St. Rose nursing staff.
They said that Smith suffered from ulcerative colitis, and was ill in 2019.
Smith was hospitalized in December 2020 and January 2021.
'He was malnourished, was extremely weak, and was a very ill young man,' the lawsuit states.
'His last days were a nightmare. His death was preordained by the misconduct of doctors and nurses.
'None of this had to be.'
Smith was told that he needed a procedure known as an abdominal colectomy with an end ileostomy, which sees the patient's colon removed.
Afterward, the lawsuit alleges, Dr Godwin Ofikwu ordered 'anticoagulation' drugs to stop dangerous blood clots forming, but there was no specific order for anticoagulants such as heparin.
Smith later succumbed to a condition known as pulmonary emboli, or blood clots on the lungs.
Kevin Beiermeister, a California-based colon and rectal surgeon, was among the experts hired by the Smith family's lawyers to investigate the care.

Question #1: Did he get the jab?
I was shocked to hear of this young man’s passing. This is the first I have heard about the cause of death.
I knew a young woman, several years ago, who had some elective (but medically advisable) surgery. I think she was under 40. She died a few weeks later, due to blood clots. They kept asking the hospital to check for that, and I think the family should have sued for malpractice. She had been to the ER 2-3 times after the surgery with severe headaches (at least, I don’t know all the details). Anyway, she left a husband and 2 kids in grade school. It was sad.
That was my first thought when I read the headline.

I had four abdominal surgeries within a 5 year period. They always came in and gave me heparin injections to prevent clotting, even when I was ambulatory. My youngest son developed a blood clot in his lung when he was going through chemo in 2019. He ended up having to give himself those injections every day for the remaining months he was doing chemo.

Well....he wasn’t a very good doctor and shame on all the nurses for not catching the lack of anticoagulant order. Unthinkable. Lovenox would have been standard or IV Heparin. Awful.
I think the parents should be sued for extreme stupidity. They should have taken their son to the malpractice attorneys for treatment. They are obviously more talented than the doctors, and they know the proper way to respond to any situation.
I got a dvt after an extended hospital stay. They should always put those puffer bags on your legs after any surgery.
