Am I imagining it or is tackling worse than it has been in the past?
Like Jack Lambert said, “They should put dresses on quarterbacks.”
Why should the thugs worry about tackling? Somebody could get hurt. The thug league can’t go out of business fast enough.
In the defensive secondary hitting is practically outlawed. Between the legalized holding by the offensive line, the one-chuck rule, and the handcuffing of the safeties for hits over the middle — the passing game today is about as interesting as a seven-on-seven drill where everybody can be in “light pads”.
This is a major problem for Running backs trying to block a blitzing Linebacker. How does a 5’10” running back stop a 6’3” linebacker?
Fake the block and catch the pass out of the backfield? Seriously, with 1-back offenses the RB has to be able to chip the linebacker. Many college runners just aren’t good at it.
Tackling, like everything in football, takes practice and they don’t practice tackling anymore...too much money invested in these athletes. Can’t risk injury.
Also, JR ... When the D gets an interception or fumble, they all run downfield to an end zone to perform a practiced skit and pose for the cameras.
Their team should be penalized for taunting and delay of game!
Funny thing is, I actually don’t mind those end zone celebrations. The sensation of scoring must be such an adrenaline burst that I can’t begrudge them a few moments of pure joy.

Great, insightful discussion.
I guess the flip-side of this same topic is that I notice receivers making spectacular catches on a much more frequent basis and I have to assume a combination of similar factors: rules favoring offense, including very strict limits on defensive backs, very big, fast and strong receivers and tight ends and the supremacy of passing offense in general.
Thanks to all.
And gloves. Everybody wears these sticky gloves now.
