Jan 11 (Reuters) - Personalized smart guns, which can be fired only by verified users, may finally become available to U.S. consumers after two decades of questions about reliability and concerns they will usher in a new wave of government regulation.
Four-year-old LodeStar Works on Friday unveiled its 9mm smart handgun for shareholders and investors in Boise, Idaho. And a Kansas company, SmartGunz LLC, says law enforcement agents are beta testing its product, a similar but simpler model.
Both companies hope to have a product commercially available this year.
LodeStar co-founder Gareth Glaser said he was inspired after hearing one too many stories about children shot while playing with an unattended gun. Smart guns could stop such tragedies by using technology to authenticate a user's identity and disable the gun should anyone else try to fire it.

The second they make a law that all firearms have to be under the control of government, THAT SECOND we are at WAR. Not kidding. At all.
When the government bans revolvers, I will STILL have a revolver.
Let’s see, I can pay more for something that is less reliable and which the government or some outside party could render inoperable anytime they choose.
How about no?
Thanks for the ping.
There used to be a system where the gun owner could carry a ring that had some kind of magnetic gizmo on it and the gun would only fire when that ring was near the trigger. [or sumthin like that]... I have not heard of it going to market in any big way. It woulda accomplished 99% of this supposed hightech way of doing things, without the susceptibility of failing in the rain.
Who is this gun designed for? A hesitant gun owner who never got a gun because he didn’t believe they were safe?
Same here. Packin’ one right now. :)
Smart guns + stupid people = dead or injured innocents.
The best safety is between your ears.
Or more than one person in the house needs it.
Agreed mandate that gun control advocates body guards only allowed to carry these.
Yup- great point-
If only Alec Baldwin had had one.
It’s time to re-enact the Boston Tea Party
