Hunters Kill 20 Yellowstone Wolves That Roamed Out of Park

Park Superintendent Cam Sholly first raised concerns last September about wolves dying near the park border

Twenty of Yellowstone National Park's renowned gray wolves roamed from the park and were shot by hunters in recent months — the most killed by hunting in a single season since the predators were reintroduced to the region more than 25 years ago, according to park officials.

Fifteen wolves were shot after roaming across the park's northern border into Montana, according to figures released to The Associated Press. Five more died in Idaho and Wyoming.

Park officials said in a statement to AP that the deaths mark “a significant setback for the species’ long-term viability and for wolf research." One pack — the Phantom Lake Pack — is now considered “eliminated” after most or all of its members were killed over a two-month span beginning in October, according to the park.

Used to be thousands of elk near the north of the park. Fed many hungry Montanans. Wolves have slaughtered them. I say any wolf outside the park should be fair game! Goes for grizzlies, too!

“ How about this? You want wolves, fine. You slap a radio collar on it and pay for the tracking. It kills my animals, you buy it at whatever price I set, out of your pocket”

I have a different idea. You accept that you aren’t god and can’t exterminate species for convenience’s sake, accept that your livelihood in ranching doesn’t give you carte blanche to destroy everything in the way of it. I’d say you shouldn’t receive any compensation from the government. Cost of doing business in God’s country.

Unfortunately ranchers are rarely compensated for losses. I know fourth generation ranchers who are about to go under because of wolves. And it is a myth that wolves kill only for food. They kill for sport, and only tear the hind end off a calf while it is still alive, leaving it to die a slow agonizing death.

When cattle graze on thousands of acres ranchers often can’t find a carcass until it is too far gone to be confirmed a wolf kill. So no compensation. In the case of the Mexican Gray Wolf Recovery program it is so mismanaged they are now releasing known cattle predating wolves (two that had to be removed from one ranch for killing abut 10 cows) on Ted Turner’s Ladder Ranch in N.M, where they offer tours for big money to “hear wolves howl.” Unfortunately the struggling ranchers surrounding his property will be run out of business, as they will endure major losses. But hey, we will all love it when we have to import all our beef from substandard third world countries and a hamburger will cost $20.

It was a GOOD reason, when we exterminated them.
Its still a good reason.

I noted already that there’s legitimate reasons for killing wolves. But there’s only so many of any given species. Cheering on their destruction doesn’t sit well with me, whatever you think of it.

I have to say, it certainly doesn’t apply to everyone, but a definite segment of people who argue in favor of exterminating predators are snowflakes who just want to bumble around formerly wild places free of the potential danger posed by wildlife.

I have a better one.

You can go live with the wolves.

As they slowly pull your guts out and eat them while you are still alive and screaming you can lecture people about the nice wolves.

Dandy should get a Federal position ‘Over Watching’ the kids’ school bus stops with his .300 Win Mag twice a day. Salaried position with benefits pays better than ‘Contract Hunter/Trapper.

You nailed it. Most people commenting have no clue what these wolves have done to the wildlife populations where they are reintroduced.

Wolves are vile, parasite carrying, sport killers who quickly remove the rest of the wildlife once they move in.

If you don’t live around them, you know nothing.

Clueless.

In BC the native Americans are Air lifting out pregnant caribou, desperately trying to save one of the many decimated herds.
Wolves destroy everything for everyone.

I’m not into hunting although I have no problem with hunters taking wolves out. The affects they have on the native population as well as farming is crazy.

Idaho Fish & Game estimated a few years ago that an elk is worth about $8,000 to $10,000 in local economic benefit.

A wolf will consume ~140 elk/equivalent in its lifetime. (f4wm.org).
