Luxury dog treats such as caviar and buffalo have soared during Covid lockdown... but most pooches still prefer plenty of walks, experts say

Luxury dog treats have boomed during the pandemic but experts are reminding owners what our pets really need – love, attention and walks.

Dogs with well-heeled owners can now wolf down a menu worthy of a Michelin-starred restaurant with dishes including grass-fed buffalo tails and canine caviar.

But experts at The Kennel Club have reminded owners that dogs can prosper without the opulent treats that fly off the shelves for more than ten times the price of human equivalents.

Thrive ProReward 100 per cent Liver dog treats sell for £7.60 per 100g (£76 per kilo), compared with a human alternative at Marks & Spencer, Scottish Lamb’s Liver, which costs around £4 a kilo.

At Ocado, Woofs’ Cod Fingers dog treats sell for £4.85 per 100g (£48.50 per kg). A packet of regular cod fingers at the same store costs £1.75 (£7 per kg).

The Kennel Club’s Bill Lambert said: ‘Dogs don’t need artisan treats, expensive luxuries or any extensive pampering.

‘They are at their happiest when owners give them love and attention and provide for all their needs.’

More than half of owners bought more pet treats during the pandemic, market research group Mintel found.

Manufacturers justify their prices by arguing that their treats often undergo sophisticated food manufacturing processes and contain the finest ingredients.

The Innocent Pet Care Company, owner of The Innocent Hound, whose treats are also sold at Ocado, said: ‘The price of our treats reflects the quality of the ingredients that we use, as well as our gentle air-drying process.

‘We use freshly prepared British, human-grade meat and our gentle air-drying process ensures the nutrients are not destroyed.

My dogs love smoked beef knuckles/knees from our butcher. But not expensive. Liverwurst too, which isn't gourmet like Liver dog treats sell for £7.60 per 100g In season deer legs are a favorite, and they're free.

My friend’s dog does love a walkie. However, in spite of them feeding it high-quality dog kibble, its favorite food is either finding a nice week old chicken carcass in the trash or perhaps chowing down on freshly deposited bunny droppings. It really has a thing for bunny droppings.

If you feed dogs, you have to walk them. But why feed them this sh!t. They are luxuries for humans, and dogs are not picky.

Make your own chicken rice in an instapot, mix some with kibble and your dogs will be very happy.

Might wanna suggest some pre or probiotics to the owner.

That’s what the dog is looking for in the bunny droppings...with a side order of tapeworms.

Luxury dog treats are nature’s way of telling you that you have too much money,

Luxury dog treats aren’t really surprising in a society where the poorest people are the most likely to be obese.

Walks not just for pouches. I am learning ballet at nearly 82 years young. All from walking daily on treadmill 2 deg upslope with wrist weights.

And as I found out with my dog, deer droppings. Loves them. I just hope it is ok because deer aren’t eating anything bad that I can think of.

And that dog getting $100 per pound treats will be thrilled finding a cat turn in a litter box and still roll in a pile of cow crap. These fancy dog things are strictly for the owner, the dog could care less.

The recent increase in dog worship phenomenon is a sad reminder of the mental illness that is rampant in our culture today.

So many idiots got dogs during the shutdown. My local park is full of them — in good weather. I call them “fair weather dog owners.”

I walk my three dogs 5+ times a day, plus constant access to the yard. On good days, I have to avoid the idiots who don’t know how to handle the violent dog they “rescued” (was rushed by a pit mix just last week while walking, as the dog got away from the owner: I went full on prophet, “AWAY!”, which worked, so thankfully didn’t have to go medieval as I have on other prior attacks by a pit and a shepherd). I live, btw, in sanctimonious, leftie Arlington VA.

In poor weather, I see only the same people and dogs I ever saw before the shutdown, the hard-core owners who know what dogs need, and we all know each other and waive knowingly.

Caviar? What tools. Play with and exercise your dog, that’s what it wants. That and a belly rub.

Mrs. Drysdale used to be unnaturally fond of her poodle. It made for some great comedy. But she was supposed to be an over-the-top caricature of a socialite. Now this is apparently normal.

“In season deer legs are a favorite, and they’re free.”

I raised two puppies this past season; they’re nearly adults now and each has their own Doggy Condo in the Kennel Shed.

My house yard was LITTERED with deer parts all season long. They couldn’t find their own BUTTS at that age, but they could go into the woods and find deer parts to drag home!

Fancy pet treats? Nope. I leave dat chit to my Crazy Cat Lady sister. She can keep that part of the economy humming for the rest of us. ;)
