Despite video replay, which sport do you believe is the most difficult to referee?

Football must be the hardest, players are spread out all over the field.

One of kids playing around here travels so often he has gained frequent flyer miles. But I tell the young (21) kid who can fly past me that he is not allowed to drive since he has no license yet. Still does it!

I can see that. Nighttime, cow pie dodging, referees have to determine if the cow woke up or not, etc.

I’ve reffed volleyball for 45 years, including 7-8 in the PAC-10 way,way back in the day.

You are correct, it is the easiest in many respects. The loosening of ball handling calls over the years has made those calls easier IF you understand how they are supposed to called.

What separates very good officials from great officials is being able handle the speed of action at the net. Some have it, and some don’t. A other problem is there are so many bad officials in high school, most coaches don’t recognize really good officiating.

I think the hardest officiating position in any sport is home base umpire.

No less than making intransitive verbs out of transitive ones.

As a sports photographer I used to love watching the interaction between the refs and players in lacrosse. It was the only sport where I saw refs respond to whiney players. And usually, they were telling the player to shut up and play. Funny stuff.

And women’s lax was a nightmare with all the stoppages.

In Rugby, If they keep moving, there isn’t a penalty.

Yes sir. The culture of officiating lacrosse is a little different than most. You are correct. Women’s lacrosse is red light green light. It is impossible to follow and any sport where there is a fouls for shooting too hard is not a sport I can officiate

I hope you are well and happy new year.

You forgot the clause that says that none of the above applies if the player is one of the league “superstars”, as traveling is essential to making spectacular showboating dunks. Also applies to charging, especially if the showboat lays the defender out on the floor in the process. As for fouls, any attempt to defend against a superstar may be called a foul at referee’s discretion, but superstars, when on defense, may mug the offensive player at will.

Curling is definitely far more risky if an athlete throws a stone at the ref. A football isn’t nearly as damaging.
