I just listed to this song yesterday and I thought “that’s heavy metal!” I’m not sure if there was anything similar from another artist prior to that song.

Black Sabbath invented heavy metal. No one else.
Flame away but deep down you know I’m right.

A distorted guitar solo doesn't make a piece "Heavy Metal".

Lyrics such as "travel by my dragonfly", "groovy", and "cotton candy" don't help either.

'Spanish Castle Magic' is lighter than some of Jimi's other work which isn't considered Heavy Metal.

The first Black Sabbath album was the first heavy metal album.

I would posit that Jim Marshall invented Heavy Metal when he created the 100-watt Marshall amplifier that produced saturated tube distortion.

Hendrix, of course, famously used these amplifiers, and eventually, so did almost everyone else.

I saw the PBS documentary on Rock and it turns out all music was invented by Black people and then stolen and watered down by White people. So it makes sense that Hendrix invented Heavy Metal.

I'm not exactly certain how the Catholic Church stole Gregorian Chant from Africans but PBS and Rolling Stone mag need to look into that.

I know there are a lot of contenders, but I have to give the Beatles credit for Helter Skelter or at least sharing credit for launching Metal. It came out in late 1968. It’s loud, raucous , distorted, and inspired one of the most infamous crimes of the 20th century.

I think the Kinks made the first metal chords I recall....What year was Donovan’s Hurdy Gurdy Man?.....that has metal chords for sure

Led Zeppelin was more hard rock than metal though some songs like WLOL or WTLB have it in them

Sabbath likely the first true metal band....planet caravan was an exception to their metal roster of songs....a beautiful piece btw to me

“In The Garden of Eden” ...another early metal sound...I’m sure anyone on this thread understands

Purple Haze....metal ish

Touch by Deep Purple ....same

Some early Zappa licks ....

Amboy Dukes...early 1968

It’s impossible to say but Black Sabbath truly ran with it

Robin Trower could have but his Procol Harem stuff which was early was not

The Yardbirds especially with Page and Beck together briefly coined some licks tha were metal and that was fairly early

Heavy Metal was born from the thigh of Zeus himself, no one man or band can claim to be its father. They only channel the lightning.

“Spanish Castle Magic” - referring to a Seattle-area dance club of the late 50s and 60s - does not remind me at all of heavy metal, nor does any of Hendrix’s music.

This is fine speculation, but clearly, Pink Floyd created heavy metal with Nile Song. Prove me wrong.
