It's a culture thing.
The current difficulties in Afghanistan have structural causes that are more serious than cyclical ones such as sanctions. The recent measures taken by the United Nations at the suggestion of the Biden administration may not be enough for a country that has been dependent on foreign aid for decades.
Since the Taliban took control of Kabul last August, their regime has reduced the already limited freedoms available to Afghan citizens. On December 26, the Taliban's Ministry of Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice declared that women could not travel more than 45 miles without being accompanied by a male relative. Along with the restrictions, the state of the economy, which was already very bad despite international aid, has worsened, especially because Washington has frozen nearly $9.5 billion from the Afghan Central Bank and the World Bank has suspended aid.
On December 22, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution proposed by the United States to facilitate humanitarian aid in a country where food prices have risen sharply. Two weeks earlier, the World Bank had announced $280 million in humanitarian aid to be disbursed by UNICEF and the World Food Programme to Afghanistan.
This collapse is due to more than the sanctions. The causes are fundamental and linked to a social organization and a culture that have made it difficult to truly modernize Afghanistan's structures for decades. In fact, the country has never been able to develop without international aid since the Second World War. These structural and cultural problems have partly made the victory of the Taliban possible. The country's history during the 20th century and its mentality should have made Westerners very cautious.

7th century jihadist state. Until they get rid of that ideology, they will never be “modernized”, let alone civilized.
In a word: islam.
When you take 50% of the population out of the decision-making process and tell them to sit at home with a sheet on their head....yea, it's a cultural problem!
ANY country like that will always remain poor, unstable and violent.
Are we still getting news from Afghanistan? I was under the impression it was all quiet there now. Haven’t heard anything about US citizens still stuck there. I guess any talk of US failure there is taboo now.
Wasn’t Rudyard Kipling aware of this in the 19th century?
That long of an excerpt of an article supposedly detailing the problems causing Afghanistan’s destruction from within , and the word “Muslim” or “Islamic radical” is not used even once. (Taliban crept in, as if it had nothing to do with either.)
Did you notice “international aid” keeps coming up? Gee. They want even more money!
The only way Afghanistan can enter the 20th century is to kill all Afghanis, and repopulate the country with Christians, or other civilized people.
That could be fixed through free market. If the highest-IQ Afghans have the income to support larger families than low-IQ Afghans, then the situation would sort itself out over time.
Instead, they have what we have in our inner-cities, where low-IQ violent thugs get the women, and charity (foreign aid) keeps them from starving. It would be necessary for the low-IQ to starve or be killed.
The United States survived for it's first century just fine with women not having the vote. It's when women got the vote that we started sliding towards socialism.
I’m not in favor of changing their mindset. At this point I want it isolated from the rest of the world and deprived of any and all support and severely punished en toto when their barbaric actions slip outside their borders. It is a first millennium culture that needs to go extinct.
Absolutey true!! I’ve always been afraid to say that, here.
Flame away!!
BTW- Do you know ANY organization (including a family) totally run by women and which is efficient and totally free of pointless and counterproductive DRAMA??
I don’t.
No offense that place will not change, it is a shithole, doomed as it is, we need to accept it and move on for trying modernizing tribal countries is stupid. I hope our leaders will never ever try nation building, in that part of the world or anywhere else.
Their country their mess, not our problem.
Not one more American serviceman or servicewomen’s life - PERIOD. That whole country isn’t even worth one of them.
Mother Teresa’s Order? But then, she was a saint, so ...
The problem with Afghanistan is that it is populated with Afghans.
It would be a great use of the Neutron bomb. Kill off 90% of the human population and start from scratch.
Maybe the Chinese will do this.
Very much so:
When you’re wounded and left on Afghanistan’s plains,
and the women come out to cut up what remains,
jest roll to your rifle and blow out your brains
and go to your gawd like a soldier.
“Islam is in the process of turning Europe into Afghanistan as we speak. The S-Hole is expanding.”
Would not doubt that in the least.
Meanwhile, the Vatican is invading the USA
