Over the last year we have had long-awaited adaptions of classic science fiction and fantasy stories finally reach our screens, from Dune to Foundation to Wheel of Time. And the good times are set to continue with a tidal wave of big sci-fi and fantasy stories set to hit our screens in 2022.
This handpicked list of upcoming highlights doesn’t include a few big adaptations that we touched on in last year’s list but are still yet to reach our screens. So check our 2020 rundown for a look at titles including The Lord of the Rings, Sandman, Halo and The Last of Us.
Avatar 2 (December, cinemas) A recently released logo offering the only official look to date at the branding of the upcoming sequels A recently released logo offering the only official look to date at the branding of the upcoming sequels20th Century Studios/Avatar The success of Avatar feels like a distant memory from a time back in 2010 when 3D films still impressed and Marvel hadn’t taken over the world. As the years passed, James Cameron’s plans for one sequel expanded into four more films, which would be shot back to back.
We now know Cameron has already shot most of episodes two and three, with Avatar 2 rumored to explore ocean worlds of the planet Pandora. Love it or hate it you will be seeing a lot more of the Avatar world over the next few years, and James Cameron is such an obsessive innovator these films will at the very least be technologically impressive.
Kenobi (Disney+) Apart from a torrent of fan made posters we are yet to see any official images from the upcoming Kenobi series

Reading is great! I have been a habitual reader for the last 60 years! I managed to wrangle an adult library card at the age of 14 in Carlsbad NM back in 1961. Reading kept me sane in my teen years!
The book that got me started way back then was CAPTAIN BLOOD by Rafael Sabatini, which I found in the school library in Tatum NM back in 1960.
I’ve read hundreds of books. Read WAR and PEACE last year, and just finished Doctor Zhivago.
You would be shocked to see how different the movies are from the books.
Well, la-dee-dah ...
[grin]
One of my all-time favorite sci-fi series of novels was written by Larry Niven: Ringworld. I would love to see it made into a series of movies, I know the visuals would be stunning. There is a lot of info on line about the books, and people have done their own versions of artwork inspired by the novels. I still have the first three novels in paperback, and I should take them out and read them again, instead of wait for a movie to be made. I might be dead before that happens🙄.
ALSO, and I know this is going a bit off subject, but I would also like to see a remake of a 1970’s miniseries “The Awakening Land”, it starred Elizabeth Montgomery, Hal Holbrook, Jane Seymour, and was William H. Macy’s first film role. If I remember right, it’s about pioneers from Pennsylvania settling in Ohio in the early 1800’s. Based on a series of books by Conrad Richter, actually won a Pulitzer (when it was worth something) for one of the books. I remember loving the series so much I purchased the novels , “ The Trees”” The Fields”
“The Town”. I purchased the DVD set some years ago. I think you can find the books, but they have long been out of print.
Sorry about going off the subject, but it was on my mind…🙂

Then as regards science fiction, which if all your prayers were answered - at once - and you find yourself in an alternative life? Heavens to Betsy?" Be prepared to laugh due to the unknown actress Karen Lesiewicz and script, but it is about the implications of God answering all our prayers with yes (versus sometimes no, or slow, or grow or go). While there are a few selections I would change (they do have the very talented and funny Karen Lesiewicz in a rather short dress for a bit as part of the negative person she would have become, though I do not find it really sensual), it is overall quite well done and acted. And the funniest Christian movie I have ever seen (good for when you are too tired to be much productive) yet about a profound issue. It give birth to Heavens to Betsy 2..
Add to that genre of humorous Christian movies: https://tubitv.com/movies/581010/crime-of-the-age
Other select Christian movies here: https://freerepublic.com/focus/religion/3929757/posts?page=8#8 when you are too tired to be much productive
I can tell you are impressed.:)
Kidding aside, I am starting to pay enough attention that there are actually some not-yet-released films I’m eager to see. It’s fun to get a sneak preview. Especially since some of these films may not get to streaming or a theatrical release for a year or more.
There are 82 feature films at this year’s Sundance. Most don’t interest me. There are perhaps half a dozen that I think, as of now, I am likely to watch eventually. After Yang was the only one I was keenly following, and I signed up for the Day Pass to get that. Filling out the rest of the card was not difficult, but the remaining three were all films for which I’d be content to wait.
That said, Sundance is weighted towards indie films and new and emerging filmmakers. It usually is a launchpad for a couple or three unknown films that come out of nowhere to make a big splash. I think the festivals are going to be more important than ever as the streamers continue to swallow the film industry. Where else are independent filmmakers going to find a platform and an opportunity to break out when Netflix, Amazon, Disney and Warner/HBO control distribution — and increasingly, production?
Doctor Z is on my list for 2022...and that is actually my favorite movie!
The Expanse is worth watching!
I am really enjoying the Wheel of Time but the only down side is the need to create and use a mole removing Ter’angreal on Egwene Al’Vere.
I hope there is something better than the latest Matrix movie. I made it through about 10 minutes of it and turned it off.
Time changer rocks. That scene at the end- “I think we missed the rapture”, is worth the price of admission. Woulda thunk Gavin McLeaod and Jennifer O’Neil were devout Christians? Great movie.
If you want to see a movie of War and Peace get the Russian Cinema Council version by Bondarchuk. Eight hours! I understand some US companies have now released it in HD. I first saw it on TV way back in 1971. Very true to the book.
Stay away from the KULTUR version of the same movie. The color is faded, and it is in pan and scan with lots of cuts.
Before you watch Doctor Zhivago, read the book! There is some difference there.
Watched the Finale of WOT, disappointing to say the least. It was so so, although they did green light a second season, so maybe we find out what happens.
Just saw an excellent movie Ida Red.
Don’t miss it.
I am not sure how devout either are, but it is a very good movie. And it is good to know that among those on my ping list that you at least are still active!
Apparently Amazon is during LOTR into a porno.
*turning*
I’ll have to check that one out. I liked Brit Marling in ‘The OA’.
