Which Really Costs More: Charging an EV or Filling Up Your Tank With Gas?

Compelling new evidence reveals a disconnect between the metrics used to analyze fuel costs and the realities that EV drivers face on the ground.

The More You Consider, the Worse EVs Look Again, the new research is just the first installment in a larger series, but its results are undeniably head-turning. The study found that:

Commercial charging rates are two to four times higher than residential rates.

Level 1 chargers cost an average of $600 to install and can take 20 hours to fully charge an EV.

Level 2 chargers are much faster but cost $1,600.

“Full charge” is a misleading term because charging past 90% is slow, difficult and unadvised, which means you get far fewer miles than the advertised ranges would have you believe. Gas vehicles, on the other hand, are good for 300-400 miles per tank.

Considering all of those factors, and presuming a greater reliance on commercial charging, it would cost $8.58 to fuel a mid-priced gas car that gets 33 mpg for 100 miles at $2.81 a gallon. Comparatively, a mid-priced EV — Tesla Model 3, Nissan Leaf or Chevy Bolt — would cost $12.95 per 100 miles.

Annually, presuming 12,000 miles driven, it would cost $1,030 to drive a gas car versus $1,554 for an EV.

I presume it is still cheaper to run an EV - for most people - but not sure it offsets the extra costs of buying one, nor the risk of having a $22K battery needing replacing in 10+/- years.

The batteries will need to be replaced. Count on it. To perform a real fuel cost analysis you have to amortize the battery replacement and 10 years is reasonable time. A battery is not just a fuel tank.

“ The dirty little secret.
An electric could be a great second car for an urbanite.”
*************

Yeh, it could, in certain situations I suppose. Guess it depends on the definition of urbanite. From what I gather the parking cost in Truly urban areas can be extremely expensive, electric or not.

Only at real low speeds under 20 mph.

The other expense that does not seem to be considered in the article is the replacement cost of the battery. A ten year old gasoline car often has a lot of life left in it. The one I am driving is 20 years old and has 235,000 miles and is still going strong. The chances of a lithium-ion electric car battery lasting 20 years and 235,000 miles are basically ZERO. And the batteries cost far more than the $4300 I paid for my car when it was already ten years old with 100,000 miles on it.

And where are these chemicals that go into these batteries going to come from? And how will they be extracted? What energy sources will be required for that?

Littleton (MA) Electric is 13¢/kWH. I think they just run an extension cord out to Seabrook.

So could a golf cart, for that matter.

It’s like driving a car whose gas tank gets smaller and smaller with use.

I had a friend who drove a Prius 250k trouble-free miles over 20 years. When it died he gladly bought another.

The idea is that if they get enough people to buy EV’s, they can shift road taxes to mileage rather than gallons. That can be used to track how far everyone drives and where everyone drives. It’s a “win-win” for the “deep state”.

But first they have to justify it.

I'm with you on EV's making power costs go up by increasing demand for power, all while it's hard to increase power supply.

But in my case I can double my solar system and triple my home battery storage for about $32,000 (assuming that's what it'd take to make both my home and the EV powered about 90% from my solar system, with me buying the remaining 10% from the grid). Even if they don't jack up the power rates like we suspect, but raise them with a modest 3% inflation rate, that upgrade would pay for itself in about 15 years. IMHO that'd be overkill ---- unless they jack up the power rates like crazy. If the rates go up a lot it'll be worth it to make us about 90% energy independent.

Thinking about solar power and EV's as a Democrat is running head-long against horrible physical limitations and bureaucratic inefficiencies. But doing it as a libertarian .... I'm leaning heavily in that direction.

All I ask is for natural market forces to decide, not government decrees. But I know that’s too much to ask for these days.

That’s not lost on me, and I’ve wondered why such a type of vehicle is not being marketed in urban areas. It can be sealed “like a car” and actually be a three wheeled car (requiring a helmet in some states). But think of large urban areas where a lot of folks use scooters, bicycle, skateboard, take uber, etc. They could have quite small electric vehicles that could park ANYWHERE. And you could go out in any weather. They could have a top speed of only 35 mph. Think of them almost like an enclosed scooter.

The biggest problem is that they would be absurdly easy to steal.

Where does the electricity for the charging stations come from?

I made an honest attempt and looked at Tesla before my last car purchase. Its not feasible. There damn sure isnt a cost savings

The battery kit doesnt last for ever...the guy in Finland that got a shock on the cost of his new battery

He exploded his car in disgust.

That’ll keep the serfs from driving which is the whole point.

I overheard the mom of a boss of mine talk about her and her husband Jack’s worldly travels and ‘workers’.

“You know, Jack and I travel all over and I’ve noticed something. The workers in these other countries don’t have cars or nice houses and they seem perfectly happy. Why can’t OUR workers be like that?”

That’s the way a lot of people think. Lowly blue collar, service workers and lower level office workers are not worthy of driving and have decent houses.

>>Again. What is the “problem” EVs are trying to solve?

“White liberal guilt.”

I think it is DEMOCRAT guilt for the party’s historical position on slavery and segregation, and their current policies that keep Blacks down.
