After Matthew Jaurequi lost his footing on an icy trail and began to slide, his friend tried to grab him.
Both hikers coasted about 150 feet down from Icehouse Saddle near Mount Baldy on Tuesday, losing their cellphones during the precipitous descent, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department.
Jaurequi slammed into a tree and was badly injured.
They had no way to call for help. Then, as Jaurequi was moving to a safer spot, he jabbed at the snow with a stick and hit something — a cellphone. It had 1% battery — enough to dial 911.
The phone, it turned out, had been there for three days, after another hiker lost it in a similar tumble.
“Hitting that spot is like one in a billion,” said Jaurequi’s friend, Dusan Ancich. “On a whole mountain — a frozen phone on the middle of the hill.”
Jaurequi, 38, was the fourth hiker rescued from the area in a week, said Doug Brimmer, a deputy pilot with the sheriff’s department

Praise God!
YAY GOD‼️
That is some incredible luck.
They lost TWO phones, so now TWO pairs of hikers will fine them and be rescued.
But they will have lost FOUR phones. Then FOUR pairs of hikers will find them and be rescued.
And so on, forever.
That's a "thank you God" moment!
I know for a fact there is such as thing as a guardian angel. Mine saved my life years ago.
If he didn’t believe in Providence before......maybe he should rethink!
Someone was praying for him......God delivered
Now I hope he goes and votes Conservative. Otherwise his fortune is that of a fool.
Great story, but aren’t cellphones enabled to reach 911, even with a completely dead battery?
CA nannystate gubmint failed. They should have had a law passed prohibiting hikers from sliding down that section of trail.
No
No. Maybe what you’re thinking of is that a cell phone with no provider has the ability to connect to 911...?
Wow, they had a second chance at life. That can really make one think.
“Both hikers coasted about 150 feet down...losing their cellphones during the precipitous descent...”
Obviously, too many hikers are texting and surfing the internet while hiking along that icy stretch of trail.
PUT YOUR PHONES DOWN...and enjoy the scenery.
Maybe time for guardrails....
That is correct: Even if you have removed the battery, and ripped out all of the electronics, cellphones are designed to still be able to reach 911.
By the same token, automobiles that have run out of gasoline will still drive you to the ER.
They are designed to do that.
Regards,
We all died.
Lucky the phone didn’t require a passcode.
Amazing coincidence. Baldy attracts a horde whenever it gets snow.
