t's common to feel some sense of apprehension when walking into a gym for the first time, or taking up any new form of sport or exercise. It might even be easy to think that you're too old to learn a new skill or discipline. But Barbara Rawlings, a.k.a. "Corki," is proof that this isn't the case. At the age of 86, she just celebrated her first full year as a regular at The Strength Co. gym, where she lifts weights three times a week.
The Strength Co. owner Grant Broggi, a family friend, suggested Corki visit his gym after she had a fall. He thought that if she were able to work on developing some strength, it would help her to stay healthier and injury-free moving forward.
"When I first came in here, I was definitely intimidated," says Corki. "It wasn't scary, it was just a challenge. I had never done anything like this before. The only exercise I ever did was walking."
She soon rose to that challenge, though, and now trains with Broggi on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8:30 a.m. "I've loved it, every minute of it," she says.
"She's been at it and at it, and she's been lifting over 100 pounds now," says Broggi.

Weight training is the fountain of youth.
“Go Granny, Go Granny, Go Granny, Go”!
Good for her!
Mrs. jimfree has done weight training over the years but we often fell out of the habit. 24-Hour Fitness shut down on us over a year ago. In the summer, just before she turned 70 (with me a year behind), we joined Gold’s Gym. On signing the contract we made a side pact to go every other day. This a.m. was our 87th visit since July 1.
We have kept our word these six months and hope to maintain it for a long time.
Yes it is. I’m 59 and wow it hit me like a ton of bricks a few years ago. Not exercising throughout my 20s, 30s and 40s were no problem but once I hit 55 all kinds of hell started. Bad knees, back problems, weak legs, sleep apnea, chest pains, so I started just that: Weight training and jogging and my God EVERYTHING improved, everything. I feel no different from when I was 20, absolutely no pain anywhere, no sleep problems, and things just seem sharper, more aware. Exercise is so insanely important when you get older otherwise everything falls apart.
“Weight training is the fountain of youth”
It really is. It’s the only form of exercise that addresses all of the trainable factors of fitness. It doesn’t take huge amounts of time or money. It can be done safely by just about anyone. The benefits are enormous.

Free weights are cheap.
A sound workout is about 20 mins.
3 x per week.
You bet. I'm 80 and still do 100 push ups every day {not continuously, but 10 at a time} and feel like I'm cheating on life when I don't {or because of surgery can't}.
I really re-started when I turned 50 because that's when the wheels began to fall off.
I have friends my age that wonder what the secret is and when I tell them...they either don't believe me or don't want to do the work, because they never do.
When I quit doing it, I'm done with life.
My hero! Great job!
God bless her.
That’s incredible...great story.
“Strong legs, long life,” as our Chinese overlords like to say.
Yep. Even a wall, a floor, and a bar across a doorway can get the job done. Weights are cheap, and gym memberships are also pretty cheap. Unfortunately, there’s also a plethora of terrible information out there, particularly on the internet and social media.
My workouts take from 15 to 23 minutes. 2-3 times per week.
My wife only works out once a week. Her progress has been outstanding. She started lifting from an ill-advised bet with our then 14 year old son as to who could bench more. Now he’s 19+, and she’s still lifting. Nobody has accused me of manipulating that situation to get her to exercise; not yet, anyway. ;)
I’m 64 and have exercised 3-6x/wk since I joined the Air Force in 1985. I retired 6 years ago and have kept it up. It’s likely that the heart attack on Easter morning 2019 would have happened much sooner and been much worse if I had been sedentary all those years. 11 stents later I’m still on the bike and on the weights.
Wow that’s awesome, 100 a day is incredible, I can barely do 30. My mom is the same age 80 and she is having huge problems, she cant get up once she sits down, she can barely walk, back problems, knee problems and she does not want to exercise and it just gets worse and worse for her. I told her take a look at Mick Jagger who is 78, who runs 8 miles a day, does 3 hour concerts constantly running on stage like he’s 20, no way in hell could he do that otherwise.
“I would definitely recommend weightlifting to anybody my age, younger, older, anybody, but particularly the older people,” says Corki. “It gives you confidence, it gives you strength to do your daily chores, it’s a very positive thing and I love it. I recommend it to anybody.”
“she does not want to exercise and it just gets worse and worse for her”
You can die in your sleep at 96, or slowly waste away from 50 til 80.
Contrary to popular belief, most people choose how they will die every day.
Wow holy cow, 11 stents sorry to hear about that. At least you are alive and on the right path. My cholesterol and BP was through the roof a few years ago, so much so that my doctor wanted to hospitalize me and I switched mostly to a plant based diet, not because I’m a lefty animal rights activist, but because I don’t want a heart attack.
I was having chest pains back then and heavy breathing just standing up. I was almost 310 lbs back then at 6’ if you can believe it. Once I quit all the fat, ice cream, hamburgers, hot dogs and switched to plant based the weight soared off me, I lost 50 pounds in 4 months now I’m down to 220 lbs once I started exercising.
I saw a guy drop dead right in front of me from a heart attack back in 1984. We were lifting boxes and he froze and tears were running down his face and I asked him what was the matter, and he just fell over and that was that. I did CPR mouth to mouth until the ambulance came, and it was no use.
You would think THAT would have stopped me drinking, smoking, eating crap, but nope. It was when the chest pains started in my mid 50s and my doctor telling me I WILL have a heart attack is when I snapped out of it. The only meat I eat is fish mostly I stick to vegetables, bean curd, rice, beans. After a while I lost the urge for Wendys and McDonalds. Bean curd tastes just like soft chicken.
She wanted to be prepared for the “feats of strength” portion of this year’s Festivus celebration.
Free weights often show up at our local thrift store. Very inexpensive!
