Cruise with 55 COVID cases will remain at sea until this weekend Ship set to return to Fort Lauderdale on Sunday after skipping stops in Curaçao and Aruba Published: December 23, 2021, 9:06 AM Updated: December 23, 2021, 9:12 AM
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A cruise out of South Florida will skip two ports after 55 people onboard tested positive for COVID-19.
Royal Caribbean International confirmed Thursday that its Odyssey of the Seas ship will not stop in Curaçao or Aruba as planned.
“The decision was made together with the islands out of an abundance of caution due to the current trend of COVID-19 cases in the destinations’ communities as well as crew and guests testing positive on board — 55 crew members and guests, representing 1.1% of the onboard community,” Royal Caribbean said in a statement. “The cruise sailed with 95% of the onboard community fully vaccinated.”
The ship left Port Everglades on Saturday for an 8-night Caribbean sailing. It plans to remain out at sea until returning to Fort Lauderdale as scheduled on Sunday.
Royal Caribbean says all 55 people who tested positive are fully vaccinated and mildly symptomatic or asymptomatic. The cruise line declined to say how many of those people are passengers and how many are crew.
“We continue to monitor their health. Close contacts were also identified and placed in quarantine to be monitored for 24 hours prior to testing,” their statement said.
On Saturday, another Royal Caribbean ship, Symphony of the Seas, arrived back in Miami after 48 people tested positive for COVID-19.
They are admitting now that they can catch it ... they refuse to admit they can spread it to others ... thats the evil unvaxxed that do that ...

Regards,
By the time Odessey of the Seas gets back to Miami there might be more than 55 Covid outbreaks.-Tom
“The day before yesterday, 18 crew members were positive, yesterday 36 and this morning there were 51. In addition, several crew members have not been quarantined, so there is a good chance that passengers have also been infected,” said Gerstenbluth.”
“Close contacts were also identified and placed in quarantine”
sounds like fun: hundreds of NON-SICK contactee cruisers “quarantined” in rooms the size of my bathroom ... AND who paid thousands of non-refundable dollars for such a fun and joyful experience ...
““Cruise With 55 COVID””
Same thought here.
The at sea community for 55+
“... representing 1.1% of the onboard community,””
I have become so allergic to the word “community”!
So now a few thousand strangers on a boat for a week is a “community”?
The movies “Death Ship” with George Kennedy (pretty bad) and “Ghost Ship” with Gabriel Byrne (pretty good) come to mind.
“community” — yet another word that can’t be retired soon enough! Ugh.
This is such a shame. I blame Fauci for all this misery, especially after reading RFK’s book.
After Christmas when the covid infected ships return to port in the USA, and around the world, I expect our press and TV to move in for a kill of cruising.
AS a cruise Line official I would not like to be in a position of deciding what to do about the omicron problem, and the press coverage.
Not to mention placating the creditors who can be panicked into foreclosing on the debt.
This Sunday onward should be very interesting. -Tom
