Population growth in the U.S. absolutely cratered last year, hitting "the lowest rate since the nation’s founding" ... This is bad

We are in the midst of an ongoing demographic crisis—not enough people are having enough babies to sustain the necessary population growth—and it looks like it's getting a whole lot worse:

US population growth at lowest rate in pandemic's 1st year U.S. population growth dipped to its lowest rate since the nation’s founding during the first year of the pandemic

U.S. population growth dipped to its lowest rate since the nation's founding during the first year of the pandemic as the coronavirus curtailed immigration, delayed pregnancies and killed hundreds of thousands of U.S. residents, according to figures released Tuesday.

The United States grew by only 0.1%, with only an additional 392,665 added to the U.S. population, from July 2020 to July 2021, according to population estimates released by the U.S. Census Bureau.

Just in case you think that whole "since the nation's founding" rhetoric is no more than a bit of journalistic flourish, it's literally the position of the U.S. government:

According to the U.S. Census Bureau's Vintage 2021 national and state population estimates and components of change released today, the population of the United States grew in the past year by 392,665, or 0.1%, the lowest rate since the nation's founding.

This is not good for a whole lot of reasons, but the most pressing among them is that, if you don't have enough babies today, you're simply not going to have enough people years from now to prop up the society you've built: Not enough workers, not enough taxpayers, not enough men and women around to keep the engine of civilization running efficiently.

That sounds like a sort of cold nuts-and-bolts calculus. It kind of is. Having babies and raising children is doubtlessly first and foremost a deeply personal matter between a husband and a wife. But it also has profound societal implications beyond that of individual families. Ignoring these is folly.

Right now there's more or less enough people to keep things going. In twenty or thirty years? We may be looking at a significantly different picture.

I went to the mall the other day for the first time in probably at least a year. I noted two things. One thing that made me smile one thing that didn’t.
1. Lots of presumed illegal mothers and fathers and their kids walking around.
2. Lots of presumed illegal mothers and fathers and their kids walking around.

US population not shrinking yet? Some more feminism should fix that.

Our society does not need an increase in workers to support the lifestyle; it needs an increase in the income and wealth subject to the taxes needed to support the lifestyle.

10 people who make 100,000 each can support more than 20 people to make 10,000 each. It's the total available tax base in dollars, not the number of people who make up the tax base population.

So this is really an argument for skilled contributors, not a general population increase. And a higher percentage of contributors, not takers. Add in no welfare for newcomers across the border. All in favor?

This is counter intuitive - you'd think with everyone locked up with not much to do ...

I will not bring children into this horrific world so long as the human race is being murdered and terrorized by these genocidal monsters now in power. No.

Looks like you may be in for a sad and lonely time in your advanced years. I feel very sorry for all of our friends who made that same type of decision 40 years ago when things were not bad compared to now. Fortunately, our progeny are bucking the trend. We have 3 kids and 7 grandchildren with more on the way. And all of them are doing so well that they give us hope for the future... not to mention how fun it is to see them when they come to visit. One of my grandsons is basically a mini-me. What a character!

Struggle and challenges are what make life worth living.

"Clearly some people somewhere at some point in time decided to destroy the white race and the West. Wonder who?"

I have a feeling that God is extremely upset with our nation..

You can read in the old testament how, time and time again, Israel turned its back on God.. And he trashed them for it.. Same thing is happening right here in, what use to be, the good old USA... :(

You make a pledge to God, you better keep it.!

Here is a link to fertility rates by state. If you toggle by year you can see that the trend across the country has been downward and it predates covid.

https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/fertility_rate/fertility_rates.htm

Also note where the fertility rates are particularly low.

My theory is that the Baby Boom that occurred after WWII was largely due to a sense of confidence, economic and physical safety and a hugely successful middle class.

Plus at that time, America was largely a paternalistic society that supported the nuclear family unit.

Nowadays, America is against every man. If you get married, you better hope that your wife is decent. Otherwise, she'll take your kids, everything you own and you'll be responsible for child payments until they turn 18. Even worse, you may never see them because there's a chance that they've been brainwashed against you.

So we are having a lot of problems and we have not been addressing them. In the meantime, our birthrate will continue to drop. It shows you that our civilization is sick.

That’s fine, we’ll just bring them in from Mexico and put them on welfare.

Come on, to try to claim this is just asinine. I just drove from Arizona to Florida. We are full beyond capacity.

I had a colleague who put off children so he (& his wife) could buy a BMW. When they finally got serious about it (years later), they had a lot of trouble conceiving. He and his wife finally ended up divorcing.

"Struggle and challenges are what make life worth living."

Charlie Brown once said, "Adversity makes us mature." When we take time to check out the young folks walking the streets nowadays, I think Charlie may be on to something...

Since 2000, the US has added 54 million people, which is the equivalent of Kenya, the 27th most populous country in the world. The 54 million is bigger than the current individual populations of South Korea, Spain, Argentina, Poland, Canada, Australia, Ukraine, etc.

In 1980 the population of the US was 227 million. We have added over 100 million people. We don’t have a population problem.

Fear mongering and economic uncertainty leads to fewer births.
Also, dating is certainly not fun for the last two years…

We don't have a labor shortage. We have a surplus of labor. Automation and AI have increased worker productivity and reduced the number of employees. Brick and mortar stores are being decimated by online purchases. And big box stores like Walmart are crushing mom and pop businesses.

“My theory is that the Baby Boom that occurred after WWII was largely due to a sense of confidence, economic and physical safety and a hugely successful middle class.’

Yes. That is clearly part of the answer. The other part of the answer is that we are watching the death of a nation. That death is for the most part self-inflicted (like so many other civilizations).

How will it end? It’s hard to tell but there are plenty of candidates. The continued expansion of a breakdown of societal norms (defund police, woke, the loss of religion, etc.), the break-up of the U.S. (this will require a civil war as before), or out-and-out armageddon by continuing to poke our adversaries (Russia & China) both of which have the growing potential to destroy us (and likely themselves in the process). While there is no doubt we have a great military it sure seems they have lost their focus while it is clear our adversaries have not. And remember, motivation is a critical key to the success of any team effort — our military and society are losing it fast (assuming it is not gone already). And finally, economic collapse when the chickens come home to roost from the 30 TRILLION in debt we owe to ourselves and the world. It could be one or all of the above in combination.

By the way, we are due for changes. Watch this short video from a few years back from The Fourth Turning author that prophesizes this 80-year pattern to a tee. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Yfb2zQjKWE&t=2s

By the way, the book was published in 1997.

I hope I didn’t leave out anything I’m sure I probably did.

When will this happen? That is hard to tell. It has happened to civilizations the world over and from the beginning of history (10,000 B.C.). My best guess is well before 2030.

Will it get better? Probably. But long after the crisis is over (like the 1930s and 1940s) and we have no way of knowing how it will look when it does get better.

Best of luck.

IC Clearly
