Finnish researchers use air, solar power to create renewable hydrocarbon

Finland has developed a new technology for producing a renewable hydrocarbon. The process has the potential to shakeup the global energy industry — if it moves beyond the experimental stage. Piloted by a consortium of energy players working with the Lappeenranta University of Technology and the state research agency VTT, the Soletair project has generated a great deal of international interest.

Hydrocarbons are among the world’s most important compounds, as they are refined into fuels for use in cars, ships and aircraft. They are also used in the production of plastics.

I think this is the real future of hydrocarbons. The carbon can be collected or a raw source, like plants, can be collected, and broken down to carbon.

Then, using solar and wind and nuclear and whatever else, create hydrocarbon fuel that can be trucked off the plant site, like it currently takes places.

Doing it this way makes carbon a set value on the environment and it is infinitely renewable.

Making hydrocarbons is no big deal. The germans were doing it on an industrial scale in WW2. Do it at a profit without government subsidies on a fair economic playing field and I’ll be impressed.

1. The relative low price of drilling is due to billions of years of building a surplus through the natural processes. It doesn’t represent the costs, when we get ahead of the earth’s ability to replace what we take.

2. As we refine the process, it can be expected to become cheaper over time as we improve our competency and increase the scale. We do have the advance of being able to scale up in the American desert, to cover tens of square miles, to produce what is needed for the American economy.

The Germans didn’t have the process optimized. The best they could do was produce around 7 barrels of oil for every ton of coal.

I think we could do better.

There’s about a ton of carbon in a ton of coal, and there’s also about a ton of carbon in 7 barrels of oil. We might do a little better, but not much better, without another carbon source.

We might be able to do better in terms of time and energy.
They used a lot of fuel to make fuel.
We could probably do better in that respect, with the best of science.

I could be wrong, but it just seems like that as the technology advances, it usually gets more efficient and affordable.

It could also be why we don’t do it, because I could using incorrect assumptions about what could be done.

"Ay, there's the rub".

Lots of "IF" headlines.

Thanks and key for me also was Mongols. Their influence on the Russian mentality. Look at Brezhnev and you see Mongol in him. Same Mongol look for Putin’s defense minister Sergei Shoigu who was born in the far east of Russia.. I have read that Sergei Shoigu is pushing Putin to turn Eastward and align with CCP.

Where was Sergei Shoigu?
