FlexCamp expanding RV pod camps comfortably on truck or trailer
New Atlas ^ | December 20, 2021 | C.C. Weiss

Expandable campers have really been pushing above and beyond simple pop-tops into more advanced forms, like transforming Cybertruck A-frames, stretchable off-road teardrops, and flip-open truck-top tents. Germany's ICC Offroad played a big role in the rotating Flip90 pickup camper, and it also has another expanding camper design in the pipeline. Its FlexCamp prototype is designed to start the journey as a basic trailer or pickup-top box, expanding up and out at camp to become a cozy micro-cabin for a family of four.

ICC Offroad is developing the FlexCamp to meet the demand for a compact, four-season, off-road-ready camping solution. With experience building everything from Mercedes G-Class mini-RVs to full-size 7.5-tonne+ expedition Unimogs, it knows a thing or two about making campers that hold up to all types of weather and terrain.

ICC Offroad is positioning the FlexCamp first as an off-road camper trailer, but it also shows a few sketches of it sliding in a pickup truck or mounting directly to the back of a truck chassis, meaning it could be a multipurpose, vehicle-independent camper pod, a design similar to the Tipoon but born from German practicality instead of French artistry. Whereas the Tipoon was created to be displayed neatly and proudly atop a utility trailer, the FlexCamp's boxy shape makes it equally at home inside a pickup bed.

These truck campers and trailers are unbelievably expensive. I just completed a slide in camper for my truck with solar power and a diesel heater for under 5500.00.

Wife and I finally went "beyond a tent" and bought a 21 ft. camper - no slide-outs or frills, just a queen-size bed, kitchenette, and full bathroom, ('cause we're old).

Pulls easily behind my truck, small enough to maneuver anywhere, and had two solar panels installed on the roof for off-grid camping.

It was our 25th wedding anniversary gift to ourselves. Was very affordable, (we're um, pretty frugal).

Looks cool, but too much set up, take down. We went from tent to pop-up and loved it except for the above mentioned set up and take down.

I looked into truck campers, but if I ever have to bug out of a campsite, I don’t want to have to leave the safety of the camper to get to the cab.

My goal now is to minivan camp and I am gearing up to do just that. :)

Someone actually makes a seat for a ‘sheetrocker’s’ mud bucket! I usually found two logs or a good rock to back up to. The bucket would have been ‘luxury’.

I know a few people who have these, and used one once

No thanks, way too small for more than one person.

the bed is uncomfortable.

The battery drains daily, although if you spend extra you can get a solar panel for it which I would recommend if you decided to get one

Friends just bought a Mercedes Sprinter fully tricked out RV for travel. They spent in the high 100s for it. It’s really nice, but close to $200k? Yikes!

Other friends have a 22 ft RV with a bed over the cab. The chassis / cab is a Ford F300 (I think), so very heavy duty. They splurged on super mattresses which they like a lot. When they visited this summer, they preferred to stay in their rolling home in our driveway rather than our guest room.

My mother had an a-frame she loved until she could no longer lift the frame... in her 80s.

That’s what it was designed for - and outdoor weddings/venues. I just think it’s pretty and practical. :)

My next vehicle will be able to tow things - just in case I see an abandoned teardrop camper needing a home/rehab. ;)
