Forty-eight passengers and crew members tested positive for COVID-19 on Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas ship, which docked at PortMiami on Saturday, the cruise company said.
Miami-based Royal Caribbean said in a statement on Sunday that each person who tested positive immediately went into quarantine. Six people who had tested positive disembarked the ship mid-voyage and were transported home.
The passengers who tested positive were either asymptomatic or had mild symptoms.
The new cases come as the omicron variant is quickly spreading across the United States, potentially throwing a wrench in holiday travel plans. Royal Caribbean said that Symphony of Sea’s future trips would not be affected. The ship has left Miami for a new trip to Mexico, according to vesselfinder.com.
The ship that pulled into Miami on Saturday left port on Dec. 11 with 6,091 passengers and crew on board, 95% of whom were fully vaccinated. Of the 48 who tested positive for Covid-19, 98% were fully vaccinated.
The 48 confirmed cases may be a setback for the cruise industry, which has slowly restarted over the past six months.
Cruise industry leaders say that being on a cruise ship is the safest kind of vacation travelers can take at the moment because of the controlled environment where they can mandate vaccines. But breakthrough infections have the potential to put the industry in a bad spot again.
Cruises were COVID-19 hot spots at the onset of the pandemic, causing the industry to completely shut down for over a year. Many cruise lines had to take on massive debts while they were unable to make any revenue for the better part of a year.
This report will be updated.

LOL that publication is a from a trial lawyer’s group, who are salivating with this news of asymptomatic or mild infections on cruise ships.
Seems like they need a rating system. Aka 1-4. 1 = tested positive no symptoms where 4 = positive with hopiitalization. 3 = positive with serious impacts rhe. 2 = symptoms but not serious. Idk. The T/F aspect is not helping. P
Actually I think it was changed to 75 years ...
New York city has 100 times more cases of omicron than all the cruise ships combined. Size matters.
It’s a miracle. Almost like the common cold.
This is BS and I hate cruises. Truth is truth. Time for one or two countries to declare BS.
That means one of the people who tested positive was not fully vaccinated, whatever that is. Wanna bet that one person will be blamed for the whole thing by Sledgehammer Joe?
Since from March 2020, I have taken in 2 cruises, 57 visits to restaurants, 36 visits to escort wife to cancer hospital, 7 visits to dentist office, 4 visits to family doctor, 2 visits to quest diagnostics for routine blood work, 100 visits to community gym, and weekly shopping at Aldi & Publix for groceries.
Not even sniffles for symptoms. I have to believe my anti-body levels for covid must be sky high after those 3 nothing burger jabs.
I hated sex too, until I tried it.
Could we please get a cruise line for only the non-vaccinated so we can be safe?
Okay. You are officially the weirdest poster on FreeRepublic.com.

Do you buy your underwear at K-Mart?

I'm gonna go ahead and call booshito on that one.
Bags may have identified an entirely new category of adverse reactions.

This is a shame for the cruise industry. We like to cruise in March, but we decided to take a 24 hour drive to Florida instead & enjoy the weather there.
Today, about an hour ago the MIAMI HERALD came out with a Cruise Ship article, asking anyone who has been onboard a Cruise Ship with a covid outbreak to contact them.
The Herald gave a link and said they would only report the story if the contact gave them permission.
Looks to me like the press is getting ready for the kill. -Tom
