2 Rottweilers used jogger ‘like a chew toy’ in St. Charles attack before a CCL holder had dad bring him his gun. He fatally shot 1 dog. The 2nd was later euthanized.

Two Rottweilers that were attacking a jogger in St. Charles are dead after the dogs’ owner and a man who intervened tried unsuccessfully to pull the animals off the woman until the man, who has a concealed carry license, fatally shot one of the dogs, according to the Kane County sheriff’s office.

“One had her by the leg and the other had her by the scalp,” he said. “Doctors had to use 6 feet worth of sutures to repair her body.”

The horrific attack began innocently enough, according to Hain. A Labradoodle made it past an electric fence and ran from its yard to where the woman was jogging “to greet her in the street,” officials said. The jogger and the homeowner were acquaintances and friendly with one another, so the woman stopped running, grabbed the Labradoodle by its collar and helped it back to its owner, who had been standing in her driveway watching the exchange.

That’s when the two Rottweilers came bounding out of that home and started to attack the jogger, Hain said.

But the man didn’t have a gun with him, Hain said.

“So he called his father, who was maybe a block away, and asked him to get his gun and bring it to him, which he did. I believe he put it in his car and the man retrieved it,”

“That’s why he came back to point-blank range and why he fired through the side of the dog. If he had tried to shoot from a distance or into the dog’s head, that would’ve struck the woman, so he was very tactical about the way that he deployed his weapon,”

Haha. My neighbor’s “red neck” cat will attack the other neighbor’s rotweiller. It is so funny. That is one mean angry cat, reminds me of honey badger

The moral of the story is always carry. I do. If I were out with my dog and a large dangerous dog like a Rotweiler so much as ran toward us in an aggressive manner I would pull out my gun and blow it away.

The woman’s mistake was mis-calculating Dog pack instincts.

The Labradoodle was the beta of the pack, the Rottis were Alphas. By grabbing the beta by the collar and escorting it back to its yard she was acting as an Alpha in front of the Rotti Alphas. This dissed the pack and directly challenged the pack hierarchy. The Alphas attacked to defend the pack and to re-establish their status in the pack.

Teachable moment: To your dogs, always re-enforce that dogs are beta members of the human Alpha pack. It may save your dog and finances later on. If they are not your dogs do not dis or challenge the pack hierarchy.

“If my dog goes after a deer or a squirrel, I don’t think an invisible fence will contain him. “

My Wife’s Sister and her Husband had an official ‘Invisible Fence’ installed in a house in the Twin Cities.

It was to keep two cats in (WAAAAAY different than dogs).

Typically the cat would see a squirrel, hunker down in preparation of the upcoming shock, then run through the boundary.

Ray would then run after the cat, mercifully remove the collar, the bring the cat back home. The first time he did this he made the mistake of putting the collar in his front pants pocket...

Even turned up to ‘11’ the Invisible Fence does not work on cats but it will train an owner not to put the collar in his pocket when crossing the invisible fence.

Rottie’s don’t snap very often, and certainly not as often as Pit Bulls. That said, they are among the breeds prone to snap and go full on “fight to the death”. It is just one of those breeds.

10% of all people killed by dogs were killed by Rottweilers. This is the 2nd highest rate by a dog breed, after Pit Bulls.

Compare that to 66% of fatal dog attacks were by Pit Bulls.

German Shepherds are 3rd most fatal with 5% of all human deaths. That said, there are way WAY more German Shepherd Dogs around than Pit Bulls and Rottweilers combined, so the rate at which any individual German Shepherd will snap and kills is far below that of Rottweilers.

FWIW, 25% of all people killed by dogs are infants and toddlers.

Amen.

Training is key. Socialization is even more critical with big guard dogs like Rotties. If they aren’t socilized in the first few months as puppies, they can develop fear anxiety that causes snapping and vicious attacks like what happened in this case. Big aggressive dogs simply have to be socialized thoroughly when young.

Far too many dog owners don’t know to train their dogs, don’t have time to train their dogs, or don’t bother to train their dogs. This makes big dogs dangerous and small dogs annoying as heck.

My parents never had dogs, so I was a very clueless first-time dog owner and did prett much everything wrong. Having had 3 dogs, I finally almost know what I am doing. My next dog should benefit from that.

Ironically, I’ve mentioned several times that I was attacked by a dog when I was a child and nearly blinded — but since it was a YORKSHIRE TERRIER, no one ever comments.

I had an AKC show quality (I didn’t breed or show her) rottweiler when my daughter was little. Miss Ursa had her Canine Good Citizen and was trained by a Miami Metro K9 trainer.

She was the best dog I’ve ever owned who only injured me once — when she side swiped me in slow motion as we exited a doorway together. Minor tear of my medial meniscus. It doesn’t bother me anymore.

It’s how you train them, their blood lines and how they’re raised. Of course,I’ll be told I’m an idiot and that I was lucky the baby wasn’t eaten.

My girl was blessed right before she passed (from cancer, sigh...) and she listened very intently when our Priest told her about Jesus and St. Francis, then kissed the priest on his hand.

Again, I was nearly blinded by a supposedly harmless pursedog who weigned less than 8 lbs.

My sisters Lab used to get a running start and go through the electric fence all the time. He’d give one yelp on the way through then off and about.

Now the owner of the dogs should be shot.

—”It’s how you train them, their blood lines and how they’re raised. “

A veterinarian friend of our daughter had a client bring a pit bull puppy($$$)and ask that it be put down, they changed their mind and no longer wanted it.
The vet ask if he could take the pup and hopefully find a home... Our daughter knew someone looking for a family puppy.

For years I’d see a gaggle of kids with the pit bull on a leash out walking. Many years.
A good family dog without issues.
